Seller has a pre 28 5 screw in a presentation box that was supposedly special ordered from S&W. Even has an outer sleeve. Gun dates to 1954 which I believe might be the first year. States it is perfect and unfired. Once again I'm not familiar with this early of a gun. I have a mint 28-2 boxed and papered that I paid $600.00 for 2 years ago. Sorry The seller would only provide one pic that I posted. Thought it would be pretty cool to have this in my collection. Was wondering the value of it. Thanks to all who respond. God bless America...

If there is a such thing as a $1200 Highway a Patrolman, that may be it, if everything matches up.

If you have the money, you should strongly consider it. If it checks out as NIB. I see a turn line, and maybe some muzzle wear.

If you are considering $1200 or something like that, get more pics.

If have S&W safe Queen already (a 629 no dash) so I would not add another safe queen, but if you want it, I'd grab it, if it was $1200 or less and 28's were my bag, and this is truly NIB.

It is sweet, but do some more digging.

I am looking at the pic some more. It is really, really nice, but get more pics. I see a turn line, which could be from the factory and dry firing.

Get more pics. If he'll only give you one pic, and has a high price, proceed cautiously.

Agree with Tom, either the photo has reflections that mimic or the gun seems to show wear. Also, this style of case (appears factory) was not made in 1954, so it is not a special order from that time. More photos and details are in order.

Meeting with the seller tomorrow. There is no wear at all. It is a photo issue. Confirmed by phone. Is a respected seller. Has all the cleaning tools and all related docs for the gun. Has 30 S&W firearms from his dad who worked for S&W. He will take $1000.00. What to do?????

Id be interested to see box and sleeve. The lining in the case doesn't look like anything Smith ever did....

As far as a "special order" HP, kind of doubt that happen also. They wouldn't even let you order RR/WO and didn't allow target stocks until the late 70's. I would be shocked to letter in presentation case with shipper carton. All that said,...never say never with S&W.

If it all checked out Id spend $1k on it, but not until after trying for less :D

I think $1K is at the very top or high in the current market for this gun. If the owner's father worked for S & W that might explain the case, but it is from a later period than the gun.

Only you can decide if the case (and background story) make it worthwhile for you.

Dan,

Target stocks were an option on the HP prior to the 1970's.

Take a lot of CASH and ask to see some of the other 30 guns. Find some more that you like, then make a package deal!:D Don't you love it when WE try to spend YOUR money?

Is it me or does this early HP look too bright and shiny. Too me it is not NIB as it could not have shipped in this box, so where is the real original box? Oh, and yes, I would love to be its care taker for a while. Kyle

This is what a NIB, unfired 1954 Highway Patrolman looks like. I have never heard of a special order for a HP, but that doesn't mean that there weren't any. These are the accessories that the gun would have come with.

I have a pair of NIB HPs..But not one so early. That's a beauty!! Will post mine later.

Exactly.
Mahogany cases were NOT being made in 1954!

My rule for buying used guns is can I sell it the next day for how much I paid for it, if the answer is no then no deal for me. I don't have to have anything and I realized a while ago that there are way more nice S&W out there than I have money.

That being said, it looks real nice in the one picture you have, I would probably give up to $800 for the revolver itself. If the case is factory, its probably worth another $100-$150. If it comes with a factory letter tying the two together then the package might be worth than the sum of the two but I have no idea how much.

Ash - I shoulda known you'd be wearing a nice Rolex with that beautiful pre-28!

Special order I would imagine. I forgot about the 28-1 that letters with targets. :D

They were not cataloged with targets until 1976.

Thanks for the correction Kris.
