I am new to this site and s&W revolvers. I have the opportunity to buy a 4 screw, I think, pre 29. The serial number is marked s 172521.I will try and post a couple of pictures if I can figure it out. Also can someone give me a wag to the value? Thanks

First off, Welcome. I'm not an expert on Pre-29's, but, to help with pricing we need, Finish, condition, barrel length and is it in it's case and are all the tools present.

I will try to find out all of the info. I have some pictures on my phone, but I am not sure how to post them here. The barrel length is 61/2 , with smooth grips and a scope has been mounted.any help as to posting the pictures from my phone would be great.

If someone could pm me with their number, I could message them the pictures and maybe they could post them

"a scope has been mounted"

Also very important - Is the rear sight present and did the scope mount require drilling the topstrap? If the latter, MAJOR drop in value from collector to shooter.

Pre 29 model

Yes the rear sights have been removed and I think it had to be drilled to mount scope. If that is the case and it is just a shooter any idea of the value. The person is asking about 2k.

You can easily post them yourself.

HOW TO POST PICTURES (Easiest Way)

You can attach pictures directly as "thumbnails".

To attach directly
Open a post (can be a new one or one of your old ones)
Scroll down till you see "Attach Files"
Click on the "Manage Attachments" Button
Browse to where ever you have your pictures
Select the picture
Click Upload
Repeat till you upload all you want to.

Way, way less than $2K if its originality has been compromised with a scope mount. In fact, maybe much less than $1K. The seller is dreaming. or hoping for a sucker. Many would not touch it. It's worth whatever someone is willing to pay for a shooter.

I tried to upload the pics- no success. I want to thank everyone for me possibly making a big mistake in buying this weapon.

$1k is probably the right price if the scope is high quality, like a Leupold, and the gun is in immaculate condition aside from the scope mounting. I wouldn't pay that without the original sight and stocks included in the deal.

Pre 29

Yes the scope is on the gun - I think you are right about the type of scope:

Pre 29

Sorry about not being able to post pics - I a Vietnam vet - I tried 4 times - no more guys if you know what I mean

I have the last 5 screw 44Mag. at Sn. 176069. Is there a screw in front of the trigger guard? Lots of 44 Mags back in the 70s had scopes installed.
I know, I did them and put the rear sight in a box. Sights and screws long gone. Sorry collectors.
