Have just purchased one....But need some general information. SN is 6040xx


Also a specific question. I am going to use it as a pocket carry weapon and want to "bob" the hammer so that it does not snag....Where could I get a replacement hammer to "bob" in order to keep it original ?

I frame hammers are not a plentiful as J or K frame hammers, but can be found. It may take you some time. Also, the hammer might not "drop in", and require fitting. Keep that in mind before you start cutting.
 
Fortunately I and J frame hammers will interchange if similar vintage and the I frame has a coil hammer spring (not leaf spring).

Post 1960 J frame hammers with firing pin on the nose (pre MIM parts) even work fine but after 1960 there's a spring strut change explained below. So changing the spring strut, a very available and cheap part, is required to match the later hammer:
