Pre Model 38 ID help

My dad passed away last year and a found a S&W revolver I can’t id after many frustrating hours searching the internet. I would appreciate if ya’ll can help me out.
It is a 6-shot hand ejector (unshrouded), 5 screw, it has a strain screw, 2.5 inch barrel, fixed sights, no lanyard loop but there looks like a plug. SN 897328 without a letter but there is a V on the grip frame under the grip. All 3 SNs match. There is the S&W trademark logo and made in the U.S.A. but no other markings. No caliber markings but a 38 fit in it. There is no model number on the yoke, but in addition to the assembly number the is an M4. There is also an M4 on the grip frame under the grip.

Looks like a cut down victory model. A lot were modified after the war. A very nice looking gun. I like it.

Welcome! As noted above this is a modified .38/200 (same as the US .38 S & W cartridge, not the longer .38 Special) British Service Revolver. It likely had a 5" barrel and a Parkerized-like finish with smooth walnut stocks. In 1942 the same gun with a V prefix would have been called a Victory Model, so this one is called a "pre-Victory Model" by collectors.

Many of these were converted to fire .38 Special; if this round seats fully in the cylinder it will fire, but the brass will swell or crack because the .38 S & W case is larger. Hope this is helpful.

Yes, in fact it is better if you do so (provided you can obtain .38 S&W ammo, which is not that common these days). Standard .38 Special ammunition can be used safely, but cases are likely to bulge. Please note these "modified" BSRs have no collectible value and fairly low retail value, as they are not anywhere close to being in their original factory condition. They are valued only as being "Shooters" and worth only whatever someone is willing to pay for them. That won't be much to anyone who knows what they are. SN 897328 probably left S&W around early 1942.
