Pre War N frame Sambar stags with P/W medallions.

I found these on eBay not long ago and messaged with the seller who said he pulled them from a Registered Magnum.

I’m really happy with the way they look and fit.

Did the factory offer Sambar stag as an option? I can’t look at these and tell anything about their origin other than they look and fit nicely.

Best looking pair of stags that I’ve seen in a while. Too many times one looks good but the other doesn’t match, but those are perfect!

Very Nice pair of grips.
They are not Factory.
The Factory would have used the metal circles like they used on wood grips, and the escutcheons are not period correct for the 1930s.

I can say with absolute certainty that beautiful pair was made by Patrick Grashorn "The Executioner" (S&W Forum). I can recognize his work IMMEDIATELY ! As I have also sometimes done with my grips for a pre-war N frame, he has added salvaged pre-war medallions to them. Also, I am almost positive (95%) they are elk antler which he has "aged" with some dye as I have also sometimes done for pre-war N frames.

As always in the realm of grip materials, I will agree with the assessment of Ken, and in this case having owned a few of Pat's creations in the past, I wholeheartedly concur, those are Grashorns......Ben

Wow, I would never have suspected that those stocks were modern Grashorn's. Patrick does nice work, and years ago he made me a set of elk antler stocks for my .44 HE W&K (1927). Here's before and after pics. They were a little too white for me, so I "aged" them myself to match my Cattaraugus hunting knife's pinned stag scales (ca. 1900). I don't think that Patrick was "aging" his stocks back then, but he gave me some pointers about working with elk antler. Those stocks look great on your .44 HE 3rd! Sounds like the eBay seller was embellishing quite a bit so I hope you didn't get stung!

Beautiful grips. When looking through your photos, I had the thought - "I have a set of Patrick Grashorn grips that have a similar amount of coverage on them..." They reside on a pre-28 Highway Patrolman (my first N-Frame 357 magnum), where they have lived ever since I unboxed them over 15 years ago...





... they still make me smile.

I was hooked on sambar stags since the early 80s when I’d buy them sight unseen from Melvin Tyler for $35 and they were always great. then Ajax and Eagle in the the 90s for around $95. I remember seeing these and thinking I usually don’t go for big patches of bark area but not in this case. They have a very antique tone to them and you put them on the perfect gun.

Sambar Stag vs. Elk Stag

I have a passion for N frame Smiths' dressed in stag both elk and Sambar. That is a very hansom pair of elk grips you have and I agree with the comments that they are Patrick's work. He has done a number of sets for me to include fossil bone. Here is a set that I picked up on ebay back around 2015 when a !00 bucks went to the market. The S&W is a vintage 1926 in .44 special.

I agree with the others that your “new to you” grips are premium Elk antler grips. They look really nice! Here is a pair of Grashorn Elk antler grips of mine in picture #1, and a pair of Sambar Stag grips in picture #2.

Larry that's super helpful thank you so much. I have a pair of actual sambar but I haven't dragged them out for a comparison photo like that. The difference between the two is very obvious.

Great to see all these nice stocks! Got me some "barky" Grashorns on a .44HE 3rd Model Transitional and a set of bigmtnman's antiqued elk magnas on a .44HE 2nd Model.
