"Pre"

Well, in speaking of S@W revolvers it refers to how they are named. For instance The Combat Masterpiece was introduced in 1949. In 1957 somebody at the company decided to give them all model numbers and it became the Model 15. Now doesn't THAT name just stir the soul? All their revolvers got the soulless numbers, however collectors still refer to them by their original names. Get a copy of the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson by Supica and Nahas and the whole story is there.

Guess my answer was kind of incomplete. Using the Combat Masterpiece again as an example, one built before 1957, in other words not stamped M-15 inside the crane, would be a "Pre 15". Hope that clears it up.

Ah, yes! My first Md 15 was not stamped in the "Crane" Therefore a "Pre" 15! Ah So grasshoppa! Thank you!

See, I knew all along you had one of those, that's why I used it as an example. Pretty spooky, Huh?

That "One' is long gone! but i did run into another just two weeks ago a a local Pawn. In the case marked $299.00. 14-2 Target Masterpiece, what a Sweet Shooter!

"Pre" is the most useless prefix that can be used to describe a S&W. It is generally come to be used to describe all Non-Model marked guns into one category. Problem is there is more then one category for non-model marked guns. So if you refer to your Highway Patrolman as a (Pre-28).... it could mean it's a early 5-Screw. Or, it could mean it's a early 4-Screw. To add to the confusion some of the 4 Screw guns were actually model marked and became the Model 28.

"Pre" doesn't mean anything until you hook it to some noun. It could be pre-model number, pre-war, pre-mim, pre-Bangor Punta, etc.

(Of course, just to pull some folk's string, you could attach "pre-post-" to any of those and create a sort of double negative which would neutralize any prefix at all .):p

Without reading any of the other responces, I will voice my opinion.

'Pre' model # xx means some silly bas**** is too damn lazy to describe
a gun as it was before model numbers were assigned in 1957.

Examples; ;

Combat Magnum.
Combat Masterpiece.

K-38 Masterpiece.

Model of 1955 Target, 45 caliber.

THE 357 Magnum. Basically denoting any N frame 357 produced
prior to model marking of the model 27.

The Highway Patrolman.

There is no such thing as a "PRE" model anything.
Considering that the named models existed long before
models were numbered.

Rant over. Thanks for indulging me.
