Looking for finger groove J frame grips that cover the back strap, but are not too long. Something that's kind of a compromise between Uncle Mikes boot grips and Uncle Mikes combat grips. Anybody have any experience with Precision Hideout grips? Would they fit the bill?

I have a set for a round butt k frame and those don't cover the back strap. but I do like the grips. They have a sort of a rough texture which gives you a good grip on the gun.

Hello. I have used Precision's Hideout Grips for quite a while now on both some J and K-Frame S&W's. I prefer the finger groove version in the J-Frame size because they are a bit thinner than the non-finger groove and allow using a speedloader. Some folks use them with the J's and others don't so this might not be of the same importance to everyone.

As has been mentioned, they do not cover the back strap.

They are inexpensive and while certainly not pretty, neither are they particularly ugly in my opinion but that is subjective.

The Precision Hideout Grips on this Model 042 are the non-finger groove version. I had to dress down the top left panel for use with a speed loader.

The finger-groove Hideouts work fine with speed loaders...at least those from HKS.

On the 642 shown the Hideouts provide a grip measuring 1.1" across.

Best and good luck.

Stephen,
I have been thinking about buying these grips to try them out. Are the non finger groove grips smooth or textured in the top photo? Do you have a picture of them on a K or L frame?

Hello. I textured them with an engraving pencil.

If memory serves, the K/L-Frame stocks are not available with finger grooves but can be had either smooth or textured. The ones I bought were smooth and I textured them as mentioned above. These are on a 4" Model 10 Heavy Bbl having the round butt frame.

The Model 64 (top) is wearing Precision Hideout Grips. In the K-Frame size, they work fine with speedloaders as they come from the factory.

Best.

I went ahead and ordered a set of J frame with finger grooves to try them out. The main thing I like is that they have a groove for the pinky when it curls around the bottom of the grip, something the regular boot grips don't have. Should have them in a few days, and I'll report back after a trip to the range.

I realize it's been nearly a year now, and that you've probably moved onto something else, but I'd still be interested to hear what you (and anyone else) had to say about the grips. I'm thinking of ordering a set like you were talking about...the finger grooved J's.
