Took the new-to-me Police trade-in 5906 out over the week end and have to say I am pleased. I had wanted a pistol that took the 59 series mag to compliment my Marlin Camp Carbine. I previously had a little KelTec P11 that would accept the mag but sold it recently. My only previous experience with a 59 series gun was an original 59 a buddy had (still has I suppose) and it never felt good enough to me to actually want my own. I had seen a few candidates at gun shows and such and thought about one of the smaller 6906ish guns but finally took the plunge and bid on the cheapest starting price 5906 I could find on GB. Nobody else bid and soon it was on its way to my friendly FFL. It was obviously a lightly used gun in very good shape and I changed out the Houge grips for flat-back S&W originals (from Midway) and sourced a few more new (Midway) and used (GB) mags for it. Oh, I won a very cheap but nice Safariland holster for it on fleabay too. Anyway, I finally had some time and loaded the 5906 and a recently purchased Ruger Speed Six in 9mm in my range bag and headed out. It gobbled up my 9mm reloads (124 grain TC) without a hitch and seemed to be very accurate, or at least I shot it well. Which as we all know is the trick. Most of our guns are more accurate than we are, it just depends if we do our part. To be honest it seems that I was on it that day as the little Ruger snub shot very well for me too! Anyway, while I have other 9mm semi-auto pistols I like a lot (Beretta 92, Taurus 92, Springfield XDm, Colt Commander LW, Browning HP, S&W 3913) the 5906 has certainly earned a semi-permanent spot in the safe, and occasionally even the range bag (at least until the new wears off). Still kind of want a 6906 though……………..

I really like my 6906. The only reason I didn't get a 5906 was I already have a 4566, so another full-size gun isn't needed. Oh, I love the 4566 also, but I have to keep them separate--they get jealous.

I bought a new one with adjustable sights in the '80's when they first came out. They had 14 rd. mags then. It shot well and was reliable. My Speer manual at the time called for 5.2-5.6 of Bullseye, IIRC, with 115 gr. bullets. Very hot! Serial # was TCB 0008, as I recall. It's gone now, but I have an M&P 9c. Smith has always made great autos, enjoy your 5906!
