The local shop has a 686 for $275.00 it is in pretty good shape. Does this seem like a fair price?

If it is in good shape and works don't pass that one up!

I called the dealer and had them put it on hold. I don't know much about the 686 but I did see the firing pin is on the hammer. Is this the way all 686 are?

No, after dash 4(dash 5 and later), the pin was moved to the frame.

Picked it up yesterday. What type of grips were original on the 686-3 ser. no BEB3xxx. It has pachmyers on it now

Reb,

According to what I read, that should be a 1989 model which would have had wood stocks. I saw a 686 no dash at a show this past weekend with rubber grips for $350. The guy said he had the wood stocks at home, but he ended up trading it. Sounds like you got a great deal.
