Can anyone tell me the unloaded weight of a 3" model 65 (pictured below)?

What should a fair price be for a 65 3" in the condition below?

I recall these weigh about 34 ounces loaded. This one looks nice and would be in the $500 range or so, depending on how it is being sold and your local conditions.

I have the opportunity to grab it for $485 delivered. I was under the impression that these 3" ones went for more than that. I have a 65 LadySmith and thought this would be a nice one to add to the stable. The lack of the full underlug would make it a bit lighter and slightly more pleasant to carry.

My 65 Ladysmith weighs 31ozs unloaded and 34ozs loaded. So this one should come in 3 or 4 ozs less I would think because of the lack of underlug. Otherwise the same as my 65 Ladysmith.

The 65LS does have the ejector rod shroud but (in looking at both recently) it has a lighter barrel contour than the regular 3" 65, so I'm guessing the weight difference is a wash. Nice justification for a new gun though ;).

The one in the photo also appears to have the shiny polish job, don't know if you like that or not.

Hard to tell about the finish from the pic, and of course its mechanical condition's unknown. $485 is a touch lower than these are going for on average lately and might indicate an issue, but sometimes one just lucks into a good deal, like you did with the 65 LS.

I think weight between the two is a wash; the LS has the shrouded ejector, but the regular 65 is a heavy barrel whereas the LS has a standard profile.

Just my opinion, but in the 65 LS I think you have everything the standard 3" 65 is and more, no need to add -- but I've been in a "less guns, more bullets" mood lately. ;)

Is it just the lighting or does the OP gun have a black ramp? If so, that would not be typical of that era.

Here is the link to the 65 3" I bought:
Smith & Wesson 65-3 3" barrel NR : Revolvers at GunBroker.com

I didn't buy it in the auction. I negotiated after it ended.

The sight is not black, and I don't think it has a polish job may just be the light. If it does, I will probably have it refinished with a satin/frosted finish. I actually just looked at a bunch of other 65s on GB, they all look polished. I just seems that is how they photograph. I will take better pics and post them when I get it.

And some more pics:

I have a pair of those Black Precision Specialties Hideout grips sitting in the drawer that have been looking for a host. I think they may be perfect for this gun.

I also have a spare silver Tyler T Grip that i might just throw on with the Magnas or some rosewood smooth Altamont panels I have in the drawer.

My 65LS is still at S&W being refinished, it will be there a couple of more months. This 3" 65 will help fill the void. I just ordered a pair of grips from Altamont for my 65LS. They are the wood finger groove grips found on the Talo Deluxe 3" 686. They are not pictured on the Altamont website, but they are sending me a pair tomorrow. I think they will look real nice on my LS. Here is a link to the grips:

Weight: 34 oz.

Price: $450-750. 65 prices are all over the place, a LGS had one a couple of weeks ago that sold for $735, it was LNIB. I looked it over but, didn't want to pay that. Two days after I looked at it, someone bought it.

Here's my track on the model (sorry, no chart):

Smith & Wesson 65-6 3 inch barrel. Revolver in .357 Magnum,.38 Special, Plus P. Blue Book of Gun Values (35th Edition) indicates between $400 in 95% condition and $475 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 16 recorded prices for this model gun from $435 to $750 over a period of 3 Yrs 1 Mos ending November 14, 2014. The average price as of that date was $573. No refurbs, no refinishes, regular sights. All represented as 95% or better. No distinction for engineering revision, if any, no special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $563.

The last 6 prices I have for this model since 1/7/2014 range from $465 to $750 averaging $598

Nice work. Thanks!

I actually received this gun today. It was in terrible shape!

I didn't even do the transfer. Big dings and scratches not shown in the pics. Timing was barely acceptable, lock up was poor (though I was assured that was not the case). Screws on the sideplate were all beat up, looked like someone who shouldn't have been in there ventured in a few times too many :)

I have bought many guns on GB over the years and have been 100% satisfied until today. In dozens of deals I have not had a single surprise.

It is shipping back to the seller today for a full refund.

I think I will just stick with my 65 Ladysmith in the 3" K Frame world. I will just look for something else, maybe a 3" 686 or a 2.5" 19 or 66 :)

Sorry to hear the way it turned out, at least you're getting a refund.

Unless you have to have .357 I'd also suggest a 2" model 10 or 64, there are quite a few police trade in 2" K's out there for $300ish. Also think you might like a 2" model 12 to go with your super light J's. (20 oz I think.)

The seller doesn't have many ratings yet - probably should consider yourself fortunate that they have agreed to a full refund since their ad is "as-is/no returns" and it was negotiated and bought "off the books" as far as GB is concerned.

You won't be able to use their resources if things go sour -

Good luck -

Once you get your like new Lady Smith back you will quickly forget about that gem. Be thankful the seller took it back.

Stay on the hunt if you really want one. Nice examples can be found. Like always...right place, right time. I traded a very nice M10-7 snub with a local Forum member last summer for this dash 3.

...the gun sounds like it was one of those $350 police trade-in specials that were for sale about a year ago. Really nice clean 65 3" guns will bring in the $600s.

I had two some time back but after finding a 66-2 3" I sold one of the 65s and it brought over $500 on GunBroker...as I had paid $500 delivered for the 66 I was very happy...

I think the project gun that I have is a police trade-in:

This one started as an experiment soon after restoring a well-used 13-2 3"to good working order. I did not do the work on this 65-3; a friend served as apprentice to a master, and both did fine work on what I believe is a police trade-in.

1) Stoned/prepped surface(s) dings/scratches that protruded or were fairly deep.
2) Complete part-for-part strip down, checked, cleaned, stoned moving surfaces for better fit/action (did NOT touch trigger or hammer after strip & clean as they are hard chromed steel parts).
3) S&W Tactical Matte-toned glass bead blast finish on all parts/screws.
4) All internals re-oiled.
5) Polished chambers.
6) Re-loctite/Re-oil on the cylinder axle threads/shaft.
7) Wolff reduced power main leaf spring installed.
8) Re-checkered original cylinder thumb release where it was miffed (to maintain original parts).
9) Re-structured original thumb release screw slot (to maintain original parts).

A couple years ago I got the bug for a 3" K-frame shooter for my woods/camping/fishing kit. GB yielded a decent Model 13-2 shooter grade with minor finish wear for $370. A trip to the 'smith for reliability and trigger job was another $150 (some guys can do this themselves - I didn't). I carry it around in a military 1911A1 shoulder holster that the previous owner had modified for a Model 15.

Since then I have acquired two 65-3's, both pre-owned shooters, the one described above and another that was refreshed with a new spring and a good cleaning. Both wear Hogue Bantam grips.
