Location
Sheridan, Wyoming
My wife has put in her 20 years with the Navy as of July. Jobs not always being easy to find, she cast a wide net. She has found a job with the VA center in Sheridan, Wyoming. We currently live in Beaufort, SC.

I thought that I was done with snow. Oh well.

We will have five young children in tow.

Apparently I am trading the odd alligator for...big bears...wolves...moose and the odd mountain lion?

I still have my CZ in .416 Rigby. I suppose I might have some use for it...

I understand it is 30 something and raining there today. It is sunny and 94 degrees here. So tell me about Wyoming?

I was going to make a sort-of-snarky comment about looking up Iggy's posts, but I think you're in for enough culture (and weather) shock as it is. Your humidity index will likely drop something like a thousand percent, along with the temperature.

Please give my thanks to Mrs. GatorFarmer for her service, and good luck with the move.

Well the days of 100% humidity are going to be history. 15%-20% will be the new norm. It can be 80 outside but not feel like it. You will have to also get used to over 300 days a year of sun. Sheridan is a nice place. Good luck!

I think you will like it out here. Wyoming has no state income tax...on her income or her military retirement check. State sales tax is 4%.
Lots of nice folks here, safe for kids.
Winters are ok.

If you get over to Yellowstone, look me up and I will show you around.

Constitutional carry for residents in WY, isn't it?

Yep..No CCW required for legal owners instate. You need a CCW for out of state of course. Wyoming CCW is good in 37 states I believe. I am in Gillette, 110 miles East. :D

**Edited to add...Check out Shipton's Big R. They have good prices on firearms and GENERALLY have .22LR in stock. I make it a point to stop in whenever I am in Sheridan. **

Erich, you are correct sir. The only time you need a conceal carry permit for Wyoming is when you want to carry in a different state. The weather here is milder than most assume. We have low taxes, excellent hunting, fishing, and good schools.

A single flight of stairs will get you winded for your first couple of days, but once you're acclimated to the altitude it's no big deal. Some folks get headaches/nosebleeds when acclimating, I never did, YMMV. Otherwise +1 to all of the above.

Spent about 6 months working at a guest ranch outside of Jackson Hole about 15 years ago. Great place but would get out for the winter months. Would move to Wyoming if I was younger. Good luck to you and the Mrs., and tell her thank you for her service for me.

We drove from Yellowstone east over the mountains, where we saw several moose, and dropped down into Sheridan. The view from the top was incredible. Hangliders were launching at one point and there were vultures circling overhead. We joked that it wasn't a good omen for the hangliders!

My mom used to stay in the Sheridan Inn back in the 40's when she travelled there with her dad for conventions and she has a lot of fond memories of the area.

We wanted to move to Sheridan when I retired, but we were to far away from elderly parents. Sheridan is absolutely beautiful. I would still like to move up there.

The nearest base is FE Warren about 3 hours away if I remember right.

If you like fishing and hunting your going to a great area.

Sheridan is on the east side of the Bighorn Mountains, my daughter and her family live there and I visit there frequently. I grew up on the west side, so that country is all my old stompin' grounds. Sheridan is one of the prettiest areas in the state, very nice climate though somewhat drier than you're used to. It is rich in western history with the Custer battlefield 50 miles north and Ft. Phil Kearney and the Fetterman battlefield 25 miles south. The VA center is a good one. I'm about three years from retirement but am seriously considering moving there to retire. There's too much to tell you in an internet post but PM me sometime, we'll set up a call and I'll tell you all about it. I think you'll like it there!

If I was to pick another place in Wyoming to live, it would be Sheridan.

Jackson Hole is the best for view and such, but the billionaires are crowding out the millionaires. There are two WHP's living in Idaho because it's too expensive in Jackson.

So Sheridan is the choice. I'd move there without hesitation.

DO NOT:
1. violate the speed limit (Iggy is a State Trooper)
2. rustler cattle (Iggy is a rancher/cowboy)
3.cause a disturbance (Mrs. Iggy is a Deputy Sheriff)
4. don't get thirsty (there an't no water)
5. don't take off your "Long Johns". ( Summer is on July 23 from 1pm to 4pm)
6. If you want to trade guns Iggy and Tom Braxson are available.
7. If you observe flashing blue lights in your rear view--In Wyoming this means you are driving too slow, so drive faster, much faster.
8. DO NOT wear PINK (don't ask me why)
9. If asked, your handgun grips are ivory, NOT pearl
10. don't ride a horse named tornado.
GOOD LUCK!

I am reliably informed that it snowed there today.

Little John's gun shop is a good resource. Shipton's has a good gun selection, good sales people.

Nice scenery, NO state income tax. Way more antelope than people.

About 110 miles to Billings, 130 to Cody Museum, 150 to Casper machine gun shoot.

1851 miles to Washington DC.
