Problem Loading Pistol

Well I thought that fixed it, but it only made it a bit better. It's just the first bullet to be chambered gets stuck. If I drop the mag and eject it, every other bullet loads fine then it stays working properly for a while. There's no specific way I pull back the slide that makes it happen either

First round jam

I've had the same problem. I found that if the top round in my magazine is angled slightly upward, it feeds properly.
If the top round is lying flat, I pull down the load assist button and let it go. This tends to put the top round in the correct position.
Anybody else notice this effect in an mp22lr?

What happens if you load a full magazine with the slide locked open and then release the slide?

Safety while fiddling

While trying to diagnose a problem like this I recommend you use snap caps-and put live ammo in another room-also, as you slowly let the slide close-watch the snap cap as it moves up the feed ramp-you'll probably spot the problem-

This thread is about a M&P .40, the 22 is an entirely different pistol (but yes, I've had that experience with my P22 which is the same pistol)

Every time the bullet gets stuck before chambering, it goes nose up, so it seems like it needs to lay flatter. But Idk. I'll keep messing with it and see if what you said is the problem

What brand and type of ammo are you using (truncated cone FMJ, hollow points, etc)? Have you tried another brand or type?

If not, that may be something for you to try.

Winchester hollow points. They never used to be a problem, then it just started. At first I thought it was my arredondo base mag extender, but the stock mag does it too.

I realized it happens under one condition. If the trigger has already been dry fired. If I cock it with no magazine, then put one in, it works fine. It's something about having the trigger dry fired first that causes this to happen

had a similar problem for a while with the first one or two rounds out the top o f the mag. I put some snap caps in the mag, slowly pulled back the slide to watch the rounds in the mag. I noticed that the tip of the round is pushed down by the slide as it moves to the rear. When the slide is all the way back, the nose of the round should move back up so when the slide comes forward , the round slides up the ramp. If the round does not move completely up as it should, clean the mags. near the top . Deposits may be restricting movement. It worked for me.

Posted in several places around the LAPD range are signs admonishing, "OIL YOUR SLIDE OR YOU MAY DIE."

I wasn't aware of such postings as I do not attend their range.

In any event, that would not be much of an issue for me as my Shield has been FrogLubed. If I sense the gun is too dry I may spread a little of the cold paste on the rails when cleaning the firearm. Otherwise I just bring it to the range and go right to loading and shooting it.

How often do you change the oil in your car? Have you ever changed it? Maybe you get a revolver.

While it sounds like lubrication, or lack of, is an issue, I would suggest reinstalling all of the factory parts and sending it back to S&W to take advantage of their free, lifetime warranty. My guess would be that you either have a weak recoil spring, or simething is out of whack (either because of the aftermarket parts or problems with reassembly). I have fired some plastic guns with aftermarket trigger kits, etc, and while they were pleasant to shoot, really did nothing for my ability to hit the target. I can miss just as wide with a Salient Arms pistol as I can with a stock M&P if I don't line up my sights. My personal experience is that the only aftermarket parts I have had 100 percent satisfaction with are Wolff (magazine) springs. Some of these aftermarket trigger enhancements ought to be left to a certified tech or gunsmith to install if you must have. And the gun should not leave their shop unless its working the way they advertise.
