Problem? or Inconvenience?

I surely don't mean to dismiss the troubles some folks have had because of COVID-19. Some are hit hard by the virus, either to their health or economically. For them, this is a problem.

Why do I ask problem or inconvenience? Back in high school a man named Bryce Lilly presented his story to my history class. Mr. Lilly was a survivor of the Bataan death march. He opened by saying "i'm going to tell you about the difference between a problem and an inconvenience." He went on to say that if any of us had difficulty hearing about the gruesome events, to go outside, get some air, but please come back. The class remained in place and didn't utter a sound while he talked. Yes, high school kids.

Thanks to Mr. Lilly, I learned the difference between a problem and and inconvenience.

For some of us, these times are truly a problem. My heart goes out to all of you. For many of us, though, these times are an inconvenience - nothing more. We will get through it.

Mr. Lilly went on during his time on earth to tell his story to anyone who would listen. He made a difference.

Yeah, I had a problem and an inconvenience this morning. We've been trying to pour concrete for 3 weeks for a small office building I'm constructing and finally have a day without rain and start to lay some concrete. We have about 15 guys working and I'm busing trying to manage everyone and need to use the restroom really bad and discover someone had stolen the toilet paper out of my Porta-john! I'm rushing around trying to find a place and everything is closed in this small town but luckily find a convenience store with a restroom. But of course, everyone is out of toilet paper so the guys on the job site were on their own.

Only an inconvenience for me. My wife and I live in the country and don’t have to associate with many people. Dealing with the amount of people at the refinery where I work is sometimes a pain but after reading your analogy, it’s certainly not a problem.

Your post reminded me of this video that recently popped up in my YouTube feed. For those not familiar with it, Townsends is a living history channel focusing on the food and cooking methods of the 18th-early 19th centuries, as well as how to replicate it yourself, but they cover other related topics. Anyways, the channel's host here is comparing the difficulties of life in that era with recent events. I thought it was an interesting perspective and thought I'd share it.
