So some of my reloads started to miss fire. But all factory ammo works just fine. I switched methods of seating my primers and still is touch and go.

Went shooting with my friend, and all my reloads and his reloads work great on his gun, but still hit and miss in my gun. And no issues with factory loads.

Any clues? Do I need a longer pin?

Thanks all.

Primer sensitizing and primer depth.

Maybe the primers you installed weren't sensitized properly, meaning bottomed out in the pocket sufficiently. I loaded 50 460 Mags for my 460 XVR and had a few WLR's go in .010 past the case head to sensitize and they all fired just the same.

I have cleaed my primer pockets, Seated the primers deep with both the press and a hand held. Also loaded some that where not seated as deep as a test. Using 2 brands of primers and still hit and miss. All this rounds fired fine from my friends 460.

How tight should the strain screw be? I cant tighten any tighter as it is now.

And I have no problems shooting factory rounds. :(

Sometimes there is no solution. I had this problem with a Ruger Super Redhawk. Work work with 45 Colt ammunition perfectly. Would work with factory 454. But never could get 454 reloads to work reliably. Tried everything including sending it back to the factory. Never figured out what was wrong!

460 S&W Magnum cases are made to take Large Rifle Primers some loads of course say Large Rifle Magnum primers, usually when a heavier weight bullet is used. Get your reloading books out and read them again or call a Hornady Tech or S&W most of all the time these tech guys are really very helpful.

Yep as I said above, I am using LRP. Most books call for the LRP but the lyman calls for LRPM. Still wondering why factory loads work fine, and reloads dont. When my friends 460V shoots both just fine.

I wanted to try here before I sent the gun out to S&W to look it over. But it looks like I am going to have to send it out.

Have you checked the seating depth of the primers in factory ammo against that of your handloads? I would do that first, before sending it back.

You may need a longer firing pin to fix the problem.

I will measure the difference when I get home. Where can I get a longer pin? That was what my cure was going to be. Any place where I can order one fast?

Thanks all!!!

I use LRPM when I reload. I got that suggestion from an issue of Shooting Times awhile back. I have had no problems, but it is strange that all your load work in your friend 460 but not yours.
Don't use large pistol primers as they will seat too far in the charge hole.
