Problem with new 442

Purchased my second 442 after my wife stole my first one. I shot it for first time today and after 10 rounds noticed the little pin under the barrel (where the front sight is) was coming out. Actually it was almost completely out. I pushed it back in and noticed how loose it is. After few rounds it was coming back out again, so I called it a day.

Is this a common problem? Should I attempt to fix it, or should I call S&W and send it back?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You could call S&W and try a new pin, the hole it goes into might be too large though; possibly requiring work to the gun. You could also try putting clear nail polish on it...I'm sure you'll get some better opinions from guys w/ a little more experience than myself though. Either way, good luck.

I would give this a try first, then call and send it if it does it again.

I bought an assortment of drill rod a while back in just about every diameter imaginable, and I now make my own pins. I have used drill rod many times to replace ill fitting and loose pins on firearms, and since the only portion of this pin that will show are the two ends, a dab of black paint marker will do the trick.

You can always send it back to the Factory, but it is a very simple repair that only requires simple tools and a little skill & patients.

Another way to repair without replacing this pin is to remove it and an O so slightly dimple on either end about 2/64 from either end and then reinstall, this will keep it from walking out during firing, have done this a few time over the years and takes about 5 to 10 minutes to do.

Practice on a paper clip to get the rite strike needed then you should be good to go, do this before you remove the pin, if you have a ball end punch those work great to keep the rounded end from deforming during removal or reinstalling.
As Cheif38 said, This is a simple item to repair yourself and to save time back at the factory.

It's probably a taper pin, I'd try a home repair first. Like nail polish or non permanent lock tight. blue, red, lavender?
