I needed dog food, and needed to get something for supper for my daughter and me last night, so I figured that justified the 55 mile round trip to the WM in Thomaston, GA. The local groceries sell a 10 pound bag of Dog Chow for about $12. Wally sells a 44 pound bag for $22. I have a couple of Llewellin Setters. My wife is in Atlanta (actually Kennesaw) for an Apple Computer training session, so I was in charge of supper.

I got to the WM and picked up the bag of Dog Chow. I just happened to glance down the aisle and noticed the Sporting Goods section. Just as an afterthought,;)I figured I might as well check the ammo counter while I was there. When the guy working the SG department got through with the customer he was helping, I asked whether he had any .45ACP. I couldn't see any in the case, and figured I was wasting my time. He said he thought there might be a box or two under the counter. He looked, and there were two 100 round boxes of WWB 235 grain hardball. He looked and found another 100 round box pushed back in the locked glass case. I said I would take all of them. The total, tax and all, came to $112.25. My local shop has plenty of WWB or the equivalent, but their price is about $16 per hundred higher than WMart. I believe that came out to about 37.5 cents per round, and the once fired brass is probably worth 5 cents. I got home, wrote the date of purchase on the boxes, and stashed them back. I'll shoot some of that with 1995 dates before I get to this. I know, it's folks like me that cause the shortage. I can't help it, though.

By the way, I stopped at the Zaxby's next door to WM and got chicken fingers for supper. Happy dogs, happy daughter, and happy hoarder.

Well, I stopped at a WM on Zebulon Road in Macon, GA today. I picked up some squash, pepper, and tomato plants to finish out the garden, another 44 lb bag of dog food, and just happened by the ammo counter again. This time I didn't buy all the .45 they had, but I bought two 100 packs of WWB for $69.90, including tax. I saw one more box in the counter and wish I had gone ahead and got it now. I asked the sales person if they were getting more ammo in now, or if people have just stopped buying so much. He said they were getting more. They had Federal 550 bulk packs of .22lr for, I think, $15.85. That is about $2 more than it was in late 2007 through late 2008.

I told the salesman I would probably start buying some of the .22 bulk packs since I don't have but about 20,000 rounds on hand. He looked at me like I was crazy.

44 LB bags. Wow. My Maltipoo (major macho dog!!!) gets a five pound bag every once in a while.
On the subject of Wallyworld. I have been to a couple here in S. Florida in the past couple of days and wandered over to SG department. In one store found stacks of 9mm Luger and just about nothing else. I picked up two for my boy's 669. In the other store I found a fair amount of .380 to feed my Kel Tec 3AT. I have also found .22LR to be pretty available. All this ammo was mucho cheaper than at gun shows I have attended. I am not really "hoarding" so much as keeping some supply around. It is .22 that I really keep a lot of.

Redlevel, You had a great deal on the Federal 550 bulk packs of .22lr. The WM here has gone up to $19.

Have not seen any .380 ammo at WM in the white box in years.

I saw the remington .380 at walley world today, since I do not own one I forgot to look at the price.

What was the name of that hot dog place on Zebulon ? In front of Wally World , Nu-Way ?

My local WW always says, you should have been here yesterday. I did score 3 Federal 550 .22LR at the Silver City, NM WW $18. The gal behind the counter was pulling them out of the shipping box, never made to the shelf.

When it comes to .45ACP, buy it where you can find it. I am thankful to usually be able to find it... at WM... $34.97/100 rds. of WWB. In my beloved 625-2... (drum roll) Model of 1988, these big fat bullets shoot nice tight little groups. The POI is POA at 15 yds. And, the WWB .45 230gr. JHP loads hit precisely and exactly in the same spot. So... when I head for the woods, I drop out the FMJ and drop in the JHP. Never know what you might find walking in the woods. A 230 gr. JHP works out real well on hogs... even deer out to maybe 25 yds. Up close, it works very well indeed. Put it low in the chest... heart and lungs and it will do the job.

All 3 WallMarts within driving distance of me have had reasonable stocks of 380, 38,357,9,40,45,223,308 and 22 ammo for the last 2 months. It would seem that the prices have not risen for the last year, maybe the have even come down a shade.
