I needed dog food, and needed to get something for supper for my daughter and me last night, so I figured that justified the 55 mile round trip to the WM in Thomaston, GA. The local groceries sell a 10 pound bag of Dog Chow for about $12. Wally sells a 44 pound bag for $22. I have a couple of Llewellin Setters. My wife is in Atlanta (actually Kennesaw) for an Apple Computer training session, so I was in charge of supper.
I got to the WM and picked up the bag of Dog Chow. I just happened to glance down the aisle and noticed the Sporting Goods section. Just as an afterthought,
I figured I might as well check the ammo counter while I was there. When the guy working the SG department got through with the customer he was helping, I asked whether he had any .45ACP. I couldn't see any in the case, and figured I was wasting my time. He said he thought there might be a box or two under the counter. He looked, and there were two 100 round boxes of WWB 235 grain hardball. He looked and found another 100 round box pushed back in the locked glass case. I said I would take all of them. The total, tax and all, came to $112.25. My local shop has plenty of WWB or the equivalent, but their price is about $16 per hundred higher than WMart. I believe that came out to about 37.5 cents per round, and the once fired brass is probably worth 5 cents. I got home, wrote the date of purchase on the boxes, and stashed them back. I'll shoot some of that with 1995 dates before I get to this. I know, it's folks like me that cause the shortage. I can't help it, though.
By the way, I stopped at the Zaxby's next door to WM and got chicken fingers for supper. Happy dogs, happy daughter, and happy hoarder.
