Profanity in posts

First let me say I have never seen it here!! There are though other places where I am a member where people think it is absolutely necessary to include vulgar, lewd, or potty mouthed language in their posts and I was just wondering what kind of a benefit they got out of it.

It again is an extreme pleasure for me to come here and know ahead of time I will not see this and a big thanks go to the mods.

Wasn't always that way, but since Lee took over he has ruled with a heavy hand...and rightly so. There is no need for it.

I agree. If you can’t communicate without the use of vulgarity then don’t communicate at all. It’s demeaning to the user and disrespectful of others. I remember a time when using foul language would get your mouth washed out with soap. Today, it seems to be the norm. I applauded the moderators for keeping it off this board.

Yep, Para decided it caused more trouble than it was worth here. On his other forum, about anything goes within reason. Just remember there are two sides to the story. While many of us don't want to see this place turned into a porn magazine, we also have a little tolerance for mild terms. Sometimes a well turned obscenity does a better job of conveying a message. We're not a bunch of drunken sailors, nor are we a bunch of sheltered church ladies. There really can be middle ground.

This is a gun forum. Mostly made up of male shooters. The few ladies we have on board generally know the terms (and some use them from time to time.) Just a little leeway (Lee-way?) sometimes makes expressing yourself easier. When some punk kid lets loose with a tirade, we almost all wonder if he just learned the terms. When an old guy (or girl) hits their thumb with a hammer, we're equally not shocked by a mild term that might make the preacher upset. We're grown boys and girls here.

My preacher is a retired Marine GySgt, Force Recon in Vietnam. I heard him once, when we were doing some work at the church, shout "GLORY!" when he hit his thumb. When his spin-casting outfit "birds-nests" on him, he holds it up and says, "BEHOLD!"

My Father was a Baptist Minister and he was for ever tellin' us boys, that some of the things we did would make a Preacher cuss.

I guess I'll have to watch those 'colorful Spanish phrases' from here on out.

I agree with Dick, but from Lee's point of view the difficulty surely is all the anxiety and effort in policing what is "a well turned obscenity" versus a gratuitous vulgarity. People tend to have different levels of tolerance, and because of this get upset, leading to more complaining and policing.

I also think that what is appropriate language between like-minded adults is not for everyone.

Or, maybe Lee personally just doesn't like it at all. His board, his call.

I had a pal in the sixth grade who when particularly upset would say "sufferin' succotash!" with great vehemence.

Wow, Dave, I don't know Spanish, but if I heard someone say that to me with a scowl on their face, I might draw on them. The great Silverback (Lee) keeps us in line, and I like it that way. I am one to let my tongue get away from me now and then. I would like to see more restraint on network TV and in public in general. You go out now, and hear a couple of guys BSing out loud and using every dirty word in the book. Disgusting.

I've spent time in the military and in the corporate world and have probably heard every profanity imaginable. But I can't think of a single profanity or an obscene phrase that would be required to effectively communicate a message where a non-profane statement would be equally effective.

That must have been quite an experience.

I've never seen a preacher holding a tool (other than a fork).

No, there cannot be middle ground.
It is simply a matter of inspiration. The "well turned obscenity" will simply inspire more obscenity an hour or two or a drink or two later. Then, about 3 am, Junior will show up to impress us all with his wit.
para removed the profanity ban in late Nov, 08. I took over Dec 28, 08. In those 4 weeks, searching the forum revealed over 500 posts with language that should not have been posted. So what, exactly, would keep it in check? Don't bother answering- the current rules and standards stay.

Same thing occurs with pics- let a bikini babe slide by, and the next drunk or 15 yr old on the board wants to show us what "a nekkid girl looks like".

Kinda makes me think back on the George Carlin routine of the the seven dirty words you can't say on TV. Three of them, I would never use, but the others are so common place today and there are certainly worse one.

Now i am not condoning the use of foul language and the rules are the rules. As stated it would get out out of hand.

But it makes you wonder why certain words (and they are just words) are considered dirty or foul?

I guess you can say the word poop but not the s word. Means the same just spelled different. That darn bird pooped on my shirt but can't say the other version.

All I am saying is words or language can be interesting, it's just a matter of how it's used in context.

It's even more bizarre with the PC "words" in use today.

I thought that was kind of what Dave said. I love this forum. Hobie, a man armed with a big S&W and a vocabulary like that would be quite the formidable foe. You could disarm most folks without the gun. Now, how many of those words did you have to look up or spell check?
