Project 586 at home at last

I start shooting at the tender age of seven, almost 39 years ago. My maternal grand father educated me in to handguns, he was a spanish artillery officer who arrived to Mexico in 1939, because of the spanish civil war (He was fighting for the Republican side).

I liked spending time with my grand dad, I really learn a lot from him, particularly the passion he had for his handguns, specially the Smith & Wesson revolvers.

He passed away in 1985, and I still miss him a lot. Years go by I got older (like the rest of us) and a little wiser (dont we all think that?) And every chance I had to buy a handgun its almost always being a Smith and Wesson Revolver ( I confess to you forum members I do have a Python Target).

Last year I get lucky enough to find two L frame 586 revolvers, a 6 incher and a 4 inch. While the 6 incher got a traditional refinish, I wanted something different for the 4 inch 586-1 *M.

So the 4 inch went to the gunsmith to refinish it in melonite QPQ. I just pick it up two days ago, and while I haven´t had the chance to try it at the range yet, I want to share with you guys some pictures of it. It now has a 7 shot titanium cylinder in 38 special (so its "legal" in México), ahrends grips and a smooth polished action.

We are allowed to have from .17 up to 38 special and .380 acp. Everything beyond that its verboten!

Since the gun laws passed on in 1972, our "democratic" government prohibited us from having handguns in calibers bigger than the venerable 38 special.

In shotguns we can have up to 12 gauge (10 gauge is verboten too), and in rifles we can have up to 300 winchester magnum for hunting in Mexico. If you are an international hunter you can have .416 Rigby etc....

For example, our authorities are so intelligent and know so much about handguns, rifles and shotguns that You can legally own a ruger ranch rifle but not a mini 14!!!! Seems that the word RANCH mean a lot for them!

For IDPA competitions most folks use .380 acp glocks and a few of them 1911´s converted to 380 acp (I have one, that my son use for IDPA); Iám practically the only one who participates with a revolver, Smith and Wesson of course!

Thanks for the explanation. 38 Super caliber 1911's used to be popular in Mexico because "military" calibers (9mm & 45ACP) were not allowed. Is 38 Super still popular and/or prevalent?

That is a misconception. In the past 9mm and 45 acp were popular and legal in Mexico, along with the .38 super. But in that time people prefer the .38 super over the .45 because the extra rounds and due to the popularity that the 38 acp once had.

A former gunshop owner here in Mexico City, once told me that for every .45 sold to civilians 10 38 super were sold. So it was a very popular caliber.

The 9 mm wasnt popular, I think that for the same reasons that it wasnt popular in the USA in the 50´s, 60´s and early 70´s.

But those caliber were legal for the law abiding citizen, until the "idiotic" 1972 law, were the .38 super, the 9 mm and the .45 (Along with the .357 magnum etc...) were banned for us civilians to legally own them.


So now, we can have up to .38 spl in revolver and up to .380 acp in semiautomatic pistols.

The .38 super was VERBOTEN in 1972.


Now the military are trying to let us with only 10 guns. Altough the law doesnt limitates the number of guns to have, only handgun calibers mostly, they are trying to imposse this on the civilian sport shooters.

So the horizon looks very dark.......

I feel for you, Brother. So what happened in 1972? Did you have to turn in your banned caliber weapons or be arrested? Did police go to homes and confiscate them? Of course, this is easy when everything must be registered and/or permits required.

Some people turn their guns, some others like my grandpa didnt turn anything. In Mexico the law cant be applied backwards if it affects you. So people with a little bit of education and knowledge of the law didnt get surprised by the government. Eventually my grand dad get older and ill, he sold his guns (artillery lugers, Walters, S&W, Colt, Star, Obregon, Webley etc) and kept just one: A Smith & Wesson Centennial.

When he passed away my grand mother found out that the revolver was stolen (we always supected from a "political" relative), only the holster and a Remington Peters box of ammo was in the night drawer were the revolver was kept. ( I now have a S&W M-49 in that holster.......someday I´ll get a centennial)


But back to 1972, the government did confiscate every gun shop in the country and paid the owners a penny a year!!! By 1998 there were still widows, sons and even grand sons of the original owners of the gunshops trying to get paid for what the government confiscated almost 30 years ago!

My Remington 1100, wich I buy in the only gunshop in Mexico (run by the military.....of course) was one of the confiscated ones from the gunshops in 1972.

The problem here is that while the law we have is "IDIOTIC", the vast majority of the people doesnt want to have trouble with the military, so they do what the "generales" say.

There is no part in the law that tells you how many guns you can have, nor any part that says that the military may propose, order or command you to have any number. But the people doesnt know their rights and as I said before, are afraid of these characters dressed in olive green.

I guess some of us (sadly very few) will put on some kind of legal fight to keep our rights!

Exactly the same here. But you have a powerful organization, the NRA, to support you. Here we are but a few willing to fight back in court against the wishes of some Generales.

A lot of people is selling their guns in order to have only 10, as the military say. In any part of the mexican gun laws its said that they can do that.

Brother support those pro gun legislators and pro gun organizations in the USA!
