I'm sure this has been covered before, but how reliable are the ProMags for the M&P's? Looking at the 17 round M&P mags online and I saw the ProMags for less.

I don't know how reliable Pro-Mags are. I do know that when I returned one which would not function, the company sent neither replacement nor refund and refused to reply to my correspondence.

Just watched a review on Youtube that was positive, but the comments went either way. Some said they were flawless and others said they were trash.

I bought preban Promags for the AR and the Mini-14 during the federal AWB. They were dookie. When the AWB expired, I threw all that **** away and bought real magazines. Save your money.

I had a thread here many months ago on this subject. I inadvertently bought some Promag magazines at a gun show. After a couple of months, I had issues and threw them all away. They would feel "gritty" as I loaded them. Then, at the range, I had a FTF and removed the magazine. The spring got jammed up and the remaining few rounds were loosely laying down inside the magazine.
However, I have 2 spare Promag magazines for my Beretta 92s and they've been fine.

I won't carry them in the store. If you want to practice malfunction drills, they are the ones for you. If you want to use them in your carry gun, please wear a toe tag and notify your next of kin now. Though, I hope your insurance agent isn't a gun guy...

I only buy S&W mags for my S&W pistols. I do a lot of research before I buy anything, and Pro Mags don't have a very good reputation. You can always find deals out there for the REAL thing! :-)

I'm sure I've told this before -

When a local Gander Mtn closed up, they had things down to 60-75% off. Mags of any manufacturer were basically gone, with empty racks. Hate to say I participated, but was paying $10 for $40 mags, so ...

EXCEPT - the ProMag panel was close to full. They couldn't give them away. I was told by an employee that they finally, in the last few days, sold them for a pittance (less than $5 each was mentioned) to a shark who flips things at gun shows.

I think that speaks for itself.

I have never bought one separately, but recently purchased a gun that had a ProMag magazine included. So far it is working fine, but have six factory magazines for it also...probably best to look for factory ones at a good price as mentioned above.

I bought a rag nasty looking Sig P6 a few weeks ago that had two ProMags. One worked with five rounds only, the other with seven. I took them apart and the springs were made differently, different lengths and tension. I believe neither were original. My experience with various ProMag magazines is that the quality is sub par.

I didn't think about it until after I threw away my Promag magazines. But, can you replace the Promag spring and follower with S&W parts?

Some ProMags work...some don't....I just don't want to be the one who finds out if it works or not. All my 8rd S&W mags have Hyve +2 extensions...they all work.

I had a Hyve +2 for my Glock 43 that worked well for a while. Then, it stopped feeding the 8th round. It would occasionally work or I could just add 7 rounds, but that sort of defeated the purpose. Apparently, the +3 spring from Hyve will remedy this problem with the +2 mags.

Better off finding the stock S&W M&P mags for a reasonable price than
messing with aftermarket mags.

I have 3 Promag M&P 9 mm magazines. One 17 round and two 32 round. They are range mags for my SUB 2000. They work fine for that and save wear and tear on my good mags.

I don't believe I have ever actually owned a ProMag but have heard many comment including one from a well-known pro shooter who said they were junk.

However, I have 2 shooting buddies who own Ruger PCC rifles which accept Ruger SR 9 mags and Pro Mags. Both have bought Pro Mag high capacity 9mm mags and say they work fine. I'm interested to see if they last.

I converted my Ruger PCC to use Glock mags which run well. I bought two of the clear plastic ETS high caps sold by Dillon Precision and they jam up inside the mag about halfway through. I haven't yet tested them with all varieties of 9mm ammo.

I have a couple for the Bersa Thunder 380 and a couple for the Hi-Point 9mm carbine. They all work, but . . . knowing their reputation you are taking a chance when buying them. They need to be extremely cheap for me to take a chance. Mec-Gar, on the other hand, has a near spotless reputation for quality aftermarket mags. I have ten of their CZ mags, and all are flawless. My M&P magazines are all factory.

I bought a couple for a Mini-30 and used them once...every 3rd round they would self release and fall out on the ground. Lousy fit on the mag well also. Sent several messages and called their customer service and was completely ignored despite their claimed warranty. Complete junk.

I've used some ProMags over the years. It seems that when they fail it's due to mediocre springs. Replacing the springs typically leaves you with a good mag, but buying the springs offsets any savings you might enjoy when buying them at their generally lower price.

Back during the Clinton magazine ban, CZ announcd a 75 B Compact in 40 -- but never built it. Promag made the mags, and they worked like hi-cap mags in 9mm guns but held 14 rounds rather than the 9mm 10 rounds. The ATF said they were legal, so they became very popular for CZ Forum users for a number of years. (The fact that CZ later had a lot of problems making a .40 compact mag that worked made the Promags even more popular.)

I've also had a couple of Promags for a Beretta 92, and a couple for a S&W Model 59 that worked in the DaeWoo DP-51, when mags were hard to find for that gun.

Using Promags is likely to be a crapshoot, but some of their mags work well for some gun lines. But...

Because there are generally Mec-Gar mags (the gold standard for magazines) and their prices are seldom more than a couple of dollars higher than Pro Mags for the same gun, I'd only buy a Promag if I needed mags for a gun and culdn't find them anywhere else.

That said, if I get another compact (metal-framed) CZ, I wouldn't hesitate getting a .40 mag for my 9mm compact. :)

purchase price plus replacement springs and followers will be FAR more than just getting quality the first time.
