Ordered 500 rounds of 158 grain SJHP for cost effective range visits with my 586-8 revolver. Price (including tax) comes to .39 per round. Anyone have experience with this ammo? Advertise 1600 FPS which is pretty hot. Thanks in advance for your inputs.

I don't recommend it for hunting or self defense purposes. Gel testing indicates they lose their jackets and the core over penetrates.

My experience in general with PPU ammo is that the brass is good, the ammo itself is ok, but not as accurate as most US brands.

Range visit with PPU .357 Magnum

Fired 50 rounds of 158 grain JHP today along with some Fiocchi 158 grain FMJ and Blazer .38+P. Went bang every trigger pull. Some through my 586-8 but most in my Taurus 962 with 6.5" ported barrel (more comfortable to shoot with high recoil ammo).Did not notice any real difference in recoil versus the Fiocchi. Also, did not seem to be any dirtier than anything else I use. This will be my go to .357 ammo as long as it is available at the price paid from Target Sports USA ($.39/round).
I recommend it (at least for target shooting).

I wouldn't expect 1600 fps with a 158 gr bullet out of any revolver. Maybe
a long test barrel.

Federal 158 gr JSPs get around 1870 fps out of my 24" and 20" Model 92 rifle and short rifle. 1600 fps *might* be something you'd see in a 10" test barrel or more likely a 16" carbine.

I suspect PPU is exaggerating their numbers a bit.

I don't shoot factory ammo, but if I did, I'd sample a broad variety of ammo in my gun(s) and shoot lots of benchrested groups at 25 yards. I would put little credence in jello testing, but a lot in accuracy results.

I wouldn't base much on price as cheap ammo that doesn't shoot well is about worthless. Do your homework (at the range, not on the Internet) and buy a supply of what you know is good ammo. Regrets, if any, will be minimal to not there at all.
