if everyone here had a choice of buying a 15-22 sport or a ruger single 10 revolver which would you buy and why?

That's kind of an unfair question to ask of people in a rifle section. Most would probably side with the rifle. If you were to ask in a Ruger revolver forum "which would you prefer, a Ruger Single 10 revolver or an M&P-15/22?" Odds are most would take the revolver.

A major consideration would be what , if anything, you already had in the way of rimfire rifles and pistols.

Huh? Rifle or Revolver? What do you want and what do you want to do with it? Very, Very basic question you need to answer, then you can determine between the vast selection of either platforms. Good Luck.

In my situation, having acquired all sorts of firearms thru the years, I enjoy shooting (plinking) with 22lr greatly. It is much cheaper than my other calibers but is still good training.

So along those lines, training, I'd choose the 15-22 as it is such a good trainer for my ARs. I personally don't shoot any revolvers so the Ruger would not work for me.

Having a home shooting range, it is not unusual for me to take a novice shooting for the first time. IMO, the 15-22 is about the perfect gun for that. Some folks prefer using a bolt gun as a trainer and I understand that logic, but I find new shooters greatly appreciate the ergonomics of the AR style gun... the adjustable stock, pistol grip, optics, etc. I prefer training with a lightweight rifle as opposed to a handgun, as I think it easier to keep the long gun pointed downrange at all times. The suppressor on the 15-22 also makes the shooting experience much nicer for the beginner.

I buy a gun for it's intended use. I have a M&P 22 lr full size pistol for my carry and daily use gun. I bought the M&P 22 lr rifle for target shooting, "plinking" and varmint eradication. I would decide what your use will be then decide what gun to buy.

I bought the 22 lr caliber on both guns because I have bad shoulders and my hands aren't as strong as they used to be so I wanted a gun that had less recoil and was easier to use based on my issues.

There is no right or wrong answer...just pick your gun for what it's use will be and mainly which gun MAKES YOU HAPPY . THAT'S ALL THAT REALLY MATTERS.

By saying you have a choice of either but not both, then your budget is what's controlling your decision. Looking at the revolver, a new one on Gunbroker is $539 to $569 and it's a 10 round 22. Buying a used one I guess you're in the $400 range.

If you like Ruger and within your budget, I would buy the Ruger SR9, it's a more powerful 9mm and with the extended mag it will hold 17 rounds and you can have it new for $399, used in the $300 range. So I would be choosing between the SR9 or the 15-22 rifle if it were me.

In defense of the rifle, I think it's more fun for plinking due to the increased distance from the target, the cost of ammo, the larger magazine and the availability of many options and accessories you can add later to customize in your own style. Here's my 15-22 customized to my tastes.
