What in the hell is going on at Smith&Wesson quality control. Did they have some one eyed lopsided gunsmith put the sights on and they're getting worst. Honestly, they're what's left for revolvers being that Colt isn't making anymore and they still don't get it. Keep in mind that this a brand new gun straight out of the box.

Wow! You do have a nice collection of some of the newer Smiths. I don't really buy them myself. . .I'm not a gambler.

Was this an online purchase? I am making the assumption it wasnt a store purchase where you would have the ability to check it over prior to buying it. If online does that limit options to really inspect a firearm that was ordered and delivered thru a FFL?
Sorry if a poor question but those pix made me wonder if thats a potential risk of an online purchase. Thx

I agree that it's poor QC, but it's nothing a couple of whacks with a punch and vise can't fix.

maybe it's because i'm still a relative newb to this hobby (for me anyway), but while i may not be able to notice an internal issue on a new gun at time of picking it up, i would not accept one with something so visible as the sight issue the OP listed. It is an obvious error from the factory, and while it may be easy to correct by many on here it isn't something i'd want to tackle (nor feel i should have to).
But again speaking as one learning here, something like that sure would make me want to only purchase a firearm in person so i can inspect what I could.

just my .02 of course.

Fwiw.... my Shield front sight was slightly off center to the left.... didn't have to measure, you could see it. I centered it with a hammer and a pin punch, using a dial caliper to get it dead center before I even test fired it.To some people the misalignment would be a big deal but to me taking into consideration how many they make and sell at a $400 or less price point some things will slip by and it was an easy fix.... much better than a problem that would require shipping the gun to Smith and Wesson for repair

Given the current "climate" and the huge demand for firearms, I can see how a few "escapes" happen. This doesn't condone what happened. However, if you put as much energy into fixing the problem as you did documenting and posting, it would be fixed.

The Shield's a great little firearm. Hope you get it all squared away!

And welcome to the forum.

So... Why did you even accept this pistol? Did you inspect it before filling out the transfer paperwork?

Even if it were an Online purchase, you shouldn't have had to accept it from the FFL. My FFL would have offered to send it back (and has done so for me in the past).

They make American handguns and revolvers sell them for 400.00 you know they're making money hand over fist on these items. It's the principle of it make a great product and honor your reputation as top level builder and do things right. I shouldn't have to work on any gun right out of the box, it should be right out of the box and until we start demanding what we pay for the manufactures will keep doing this. This was a gift to me so I didn't pick it out and didn't get a chance to see it until I took it the box and no I will not drift the sight over with a brass drift as they make the right tool for the job, yes the brass drift will work but why should I do that. I'm gonna replace the sights today with something different and I have the mgw sight tool and brass drifts and punches and sight punches and tools to do the job. I'm simply stating that we need to demand that companies start producing great American goods.

Saudade guess you have a valid point just fix it and quit my bellyaching or as I like to say it fire-trucking and I have the tools, it's just a damn shame anyway need to get to work in fixing this thanks for the encouragement

btw, I do love the pistol and how it handles feels great in my hands

Totally agree that you should not have to deal with this sort of problem on a brand new gun. If Smith needs to charge an extra $10 to get the QC right, that's what they need to do. Glad to read you have the proper tools to correct the issue.

Ahhhh . . . you didn't notice this when you picked it up? If purchased at a LGS . . . or purchased online and shipped to a FFL . . did you not have the opportunity to look it over before you accepted it? Or do you have a FFL? Any of those scenarios you would have the right to either reject or return.

I also have a nice "collection" of S & W handguns and I have never had an issue with any of them nor with my Shield. S & W is a manufacturing company that makes many firearms. No different that Ford,GM etc. who makes cars/trucks or Sony, Toshiba, etc. that makes electronics. Every once in a while something will slip through QC and it's pretty impossible to have 100% of production be "perfect" . . . especially when made by people.

I'm not defending S & W or this slipping through . .. but the complete story would be nice to know as to how you came in to possession of the Shield and why it slipped past your "quality control"?
