Question about 586-8 4" classic grips

Does anyone know why the right hand wooden grip doesn't match the left-hand side? ..the left hand side (where the cylinder latch is) is styled similar to my Mod 29 (which has identical grips, right & left). is it to help with the grip for RH shooters? the cut-out provides a nice spot for the thumb.....just curious, thanks.

I'm surprised at how skinny the grips are on the L & N frame Smiths. The grips on my 686 no dash are nice and beefy. How do people feel about this?
