I'm not usually a big fan of finger groove grips...seems like my fingers don't want to go where the grip maker thinks they should, with Houges especially. Pachmyers are a little better, but I still prefer wood to rubber grips on my S&W revolvers. I've been considering a set of the Ahrends finger groove retro combat grips for a square butt 629 and was wondering how closely the finger grooves on the Ahrends match the ones on Houges or Packys.

I really like the Tactical finger groove, they fit my hands better than the Hogue rubber. I just ordered a set for my 24-3.

Or you can do what I did. Buy an UNFINISHED set of grips and file/sand the bottom finger grove off. This way only the middle finger is locked in and the bottom two can move up to control recoil. Hogue makes something similar, but I don't like the coke bottle profile of their grips.

I think it's safe to say at this point that I like them. I find that I prefer the profile and rounded front of the Retro Combat square butt than any of his other offerings.

I just received an Ahrend's NON-finger groove model for my N frame and also just ordered the same for a L frame. He does make them, give him an email to see if he can make what you want.

Can't answer your question directly, but I've got a couple of sets of Ahrends Retro Combat K-frames and they've very comfortable for me. I just got a set of Retro Targets for my K-22, but I haven't tried them out yet.

I can't answer directly either. All of the Ahrends grips I have are without finger grooves. And none of them need any. All are excellent.

I own several styles of Ahrend's grips, but my new favorite is the tactical, non finger groove on my model 28. I also have the retro combats with the finger grooves. I like them but I'll be changing over to the tactical non FG, and selling the others. Ahrend's is a great value in terms of price and quality, IMHO. Good luck.

Ahrends "Tactical" grips have a flat front, which helps align then gun in battery position. Their "Retro" grips have round fronts, which are more comfortable, but less intuitive on the firing line. I have a couple of of each style.

My hands are on the small side. I take a high grip, which puts my middle finger on inside the top groove. My ring finger fits in the second groove, with my little finger in the third groove, or underneath for boot grips.

The grooves are generic. In any case, the middle finger should go high for control, never spread out and into the second groove.

Hogue grips have a pronounced palm swell, which puts my hand too low for recoil control if I hold for comfort, and leaves the web too narrow at the top to cushion the recoil.

I use the Ahrends non-finger grooved tactical grips on my 686. My hands are medium-small, and the finger grooves are spaced just a little too far apart. I can get my fingers closer together without the grooves and get better control.
