Question about guns on boats.

At least two of the major Maritime academies in the U.S. offer firearms training. This is mandatory for crews that would work military sea lift assignments. Other articles on the subject have mentioned that at least one shipping company is providing for the issue of rifles for their crews. Other companies are hiring Ghurkas or other private security to ride along in boats in risky areas. The entity formerly known as Blackwater now owns their own ship.

Though various naval treaties have more or less put an end to the practice, it remains within the power of Congress (check the Constitution) to repudiate these treaties and enable privateers to take to the sea.

...crew members should be issued a Browning Automatic Rifle...a sharp axe...and be required to watch Steve McQueen in the Sand Pebbles...

.

As stupid as it is, the UN will not allow the arming of merchant vessels.

That is why the merchant companies will not arm the crews. Remember these ships are owned by companies, and those companies need to make a profit in order to operate.

If the cannot get insurance, the cannot afford to carry cargo.

As stupid as it sounds, that is how the world turns.

When I'm on my boat, guess what else will be on board

Do tankers burn when hit by multiple RPGs from several pirates' swift boats?

A much more effective approach would be for the Saudi's to offer reward money for the capture of the pirates. "$500,000 dead or alive" would bring plenty of "entrepreneurs" to the scene. The bounty hunters would not be limited by the idiot underwriters at the insurance companies. A few private boats, properly armed, cruising the same waters, would definitely dampen the spirits (and activities) of the pirates.

Out at sea, who is going to question you for sinking the pirates' vessel. Dead men tell no tales.
This is pretty much the way Blackbeard met his fate.

CNN had mentioned in a report that Liability Insuror's were prohibiting guns onboard. And ship operators don't go to sea without insurance.
Bullsh!t. A friend of mine is a marine undewriter and I asked him for his response to the above. He replied:

"Guns in the work place is a locale national issue.
From a legal US stand point their could be a liability issue. But not a insurance issue.
Most nations want a third party providing security.
The UK put 2 SAS ( British seals) on a UK vessel and they were overwhelmed and orderd to jump overboard and were picked up by british helicopters. The ship was seized.
So the lesson was they need about 10 armed person per vessel with legal authority to use deadly force.
Interesting on this Mearsk capture the Obama administration informed ALL US Flag vessels that if they harmed a pirate they would be prosecuted under US laws.
Interesting that there are 3 US warship at the scene now and the pirates are going to drift ashore and walk with the hostage.
All of our enemies are watching Obama do nothing.
Watch you back now." (this response was before te rescue).

HoustonRick this guy lives in Clearlake-When I get over to see him, I'm gonna call you up and introduce you to him. If you can sail, we may very well put you on the boat for the Port Aransas race!!
