Many of you were kind enough to “Like” my thread about the acquisition of a 4” Model 24-3 (“Grail Gun”), but there is more to it than that.

When I started my search for a 4” 24-3 on the web, I came across all the iterations of that model. Prior to finding the 24-3 that I bought, I found a Lew Horton 3” 24-3 on an auction site. It was at a very low price, but there were almost two weeks until the auction closed. I knew that the low price wouldn’t last, but deemed it worth watching, especially if I didn’t find exactly what I was after.

But I did, and that is the story told in the other thread. But even after I acquired the 4” gun, the auction for the Lew Horton gun was still tantalizingly slow to reach its peak, so I kept my eye on it.

The numbers started to rise with about 8 hours to go, but not unreasonably. It seemed to stabilize with about two hours left so I decided I was going to figure my absolute maximum bid, wait until there was about 15 minutes left, throw that number at it and walk away – not to be tempted if someone outbid me. That’s exactly what I did and when I came back 30 minutes or so later, I was the winner at exactly my maximum bid.

So now I am the proud owner of two Model 24-3’s – a 4” one and a Lew Horton 3” gun.

Sorry, that was a long preamble to get to my question. The Lew Horton guns were all round-butts, but I remember reading somewhere that these were the first, or among the first, round-butt N-frames and as such were made to K/L frame dimensions. I even found this, which legitimizes my memory (although this references 624’s and I have one of those also, and it is wearing grips designated “N-frame RB”)…

As you can see, the gun is wearing non-OEM grips, and while those are nice, I would prefer to put my own individual stamp on this – most likely a pair of Driskill stags. So the question to you other fortunate owners of Lew Horton 24-3’s, is: Do I buy K/L-frame round-butt grips, or those designated as N-frame round-butt.

Thanks for your collective knowledge.

Bob, I remember past posts asking the same question. I don't know why the K frame reference was ever printed on the Lew Horton ad because that is most definitely an N frame grip on the 3"er. I can't wait to see it with the stags when you get them.

That is correct. The Lew Horton 24-3 round butt's are definitely N frame.
That ad was very confusing and incorrect.

Thanks guys. Now I just need to wait until Ken puts up a nice set of stags.
