I've been doing a little reading about Maryland gun laws, I'm finding some inconsistencies.

I've seen some say that Maryland requires registration of handguns. Other sources say that Maryland registers transfers, implying that registration isn't required (unless transferred). Which is correct?

I lived there briefly in the late 80's/early 90's. At the time there was no registration, but I think licensed dealers were required to report transfers to the state police.

Having moved out of MD (Thankfully) about 20 years ago, they had the requirement that each handgun purchase made through a MD FFL had to receive state police approval. Since I was there, they have enacted more stringent laws which I'm not familiar with. I wanted to give my brother (MD resident) a P38 which our father had brought home but was not able to. The cost of required paperwork and other hoops made it impossible to legally transfer it to him from out of state.

Specifics.

New sales/transfers of handguns require an application with a seven (7) day waiting period before the physical exchange of the firearm. A background check is conducted, and the serial number of the firearm is recorded.

The same application can be used for VOLUNTARY registration of handguns. Shotguns and rifles are not regulated, and no waiting period is required.

The application fee is $10.00.

Hope this is helpful.

Be safe.

Huh?

Sales/transfers between family members have ZERO application costs. If a FFL is involved that may cost but is not state mandated.

Be safe.

Thanks for the info.

I did find some comments about the Maryland Firearms Safety Act of 2013, which says that new residents are required to register their handguns. This is disconcerting.
