Question about red dot sights

For a range toy, there isn't much difference.
For a combat weapon the "heads up" style have external emitters which can be covered in dirt or water and prevent them from working correctly (or at all).
My personal favorite is the tube type -Specifically the Aimpoint H-1 followed by the Primary Arms micro and then the Bushnell T(LS?)-25.
Ironically my latest purchase was an external emitter "Head ups" style sight. But that was for range work not real world use.

I've used both and prefer the open frame Reflex. They are much easier to use with both eyes open, more compact, and vastly easier to fit a holster for.

In use, there is really little difference between the two; look at your target, both eyes open, as you raise your rifle and the dot appears, with the body of the sight becoming all but invisible. I like the compactness of the open type, but have always felt (nothing to back it up) that the tubes types are a bit more rugged.

There is plenty to back it up.
Especially with micro dots like the RMR and such. They are getting used more and more on semi auto pistols, mounted directly to the slide. With hard use an RMR will die in about 6 months, the Aimpoint H1/T1's last longer.

They are J Points, or what were once Optima 2000's. Reflex sights require some rather expensive tooling so once a particular design appears it can be seen under a variety of brand names due to whoever decides to market that particular sight. Currently JP Rifles sells this sight as the J Point and they also make a very slick little mount for it that will also take the Doctor reflex with an adapter plate.

That seems like a pretty solid state to be in...
I prefer headups open style....I've got both but the Eotech/Bushnell Holosights I have are my favorites. I also have a Trijicon Reflex but the orange dot tends to go away against my orange targets.
I've broken two red dots so far and they were both tube style...one Millet and one Bushnell....down to 2 tube style left if they can hold together I'll be happy.

I started with a heads up and switched to the tube because it was a better quality sight. I like both. I thought the tube would be restricting because of the bulk, but at the range its not at all. To me it all boils down to the quality of the sight v/s the design.
When I first started reading some of the responses, I thought I was in the wrong forum when folks started talking about sights for "combat weapons and real world use"
Then I read about Eotech being mentioned, then I was convinced I was in the wrong forum. Had to click back and found, yeah I was in the 22 lr forum.
Anyways?
If you are looking for a dot sight, you already know your choices.
Ive tried a few of them and like the heads up display type like this one.

They appear to be durable, Ive got one that has about 2500 rounds thru it, another about 1000. Still hold zero, mount well and are lot more inexpensive then this site has them.There are many different company's buying this sight from China and putting their own name on them, but they are all about the same.I bought my last one from Amazon, cost me $28 and that included shipping.
This one included the green dot that is much more visible then the red in bright sunlight.
The tube type, looks like you are looking thru a tube. Helps you focus on your target. The heads up type gives you a larger field of view, to see more targets. Your choice.
Just remember, this IS just a 22lr. It does not have a lot of recoil that will kill a cheap dot.

I have a heads up similiar to the one posted. I got mine off ebay for $30. No name brand.. I just got it and put almost 500 rounds through it, was accurate at 50yards and 100 yards. The way I look at it is, this is a .22, no need for a $400 dollar sight for the range.

Actually, no I didnt. Back before I bought mine, I watched what other competitors were using. I asked lots of questions of them , tried the different styles and I liked this one.
Mine has been very reliable along with a dozen or so of others that use the same and have for some time.

But?
If you notice that many of the complaints are from folks that put them on high recoil weapons, yeah I wouldn't do that. But here, we are talking about a 22 lr. Its not going to bang the sight around at all during recoil.
Then, people today just love to complain about stuff because its so easy to do "on line"
