Question about S&W 645 / 745 .45

Hi All,

I am basically a true S&W revolver guy but have been bit by the Smith and Wesson Semi auto bug.... I have several M41's and just bought my first centerfire S&W Auto, a M4567. I never realized how nice the S&W autos truly are, even though I shoot a lot of 1911's.....

Now, I want another .45 in the future....

What do you guys prefer, a M645 or a M745? Any difference? Seem kind of hard to find, I searched a bit and didnt see much for sale.... I know they are both single action , where they worked on at the Performance Center? Would love to see a pic or two please.

Do they both use the 45XX 8 rd series of mags? Might be nice to buy all the same mags for the same guns......

Look for an 845. Feels like a 4506, but shoots like a 745 (single action only). 645 is TDA like a 4506, and has a longer DA pull, and feels very different in the hand. If you like the feel of the 3rd gen, and you like SAO, the 845 is hard to beat.
They made a few 4505s. Those are blue...

The only problem with the 845 is rarity and price. A 745 is the target model of the 645, and is Single Action Only like a 1911, with oversized mag release--as S&W didn't want to make a 1911 gun at the time, but wanted to put a dog in the fight for IPSC. Believe they made 2 batches of 5,000 of the 745, with one batch being an "IPSC 10th Anniversary" edition with serial numbers starting with DVC, and having "gold filled" lettering. The other 5,000 were plained slides. Believe they offered the 745 in both adjustable & fixed sight versions. The 745 adjustable sight version is a more traditional 1911 style sight, version the large winged 645 adjustable. 745 are going to run between $500 and $800, where as 845's are going to run generally $1,200+. I could be wrong, but that is my assessment.

Really the only thing the 745 I handled needed (in my mind) was an undercut front strap. I have big hands, and had trouble getting a high enough hold on it. As far as I know, this is an easy mod.

The 645 is "combat accurate", and the 745 is a target gun.

I have the 645 and two of the adjustable sight 745s. As mentioned above the 645 is combat accurate whereas the 745s are the most accurate out of the box pistols I have every used. Trigger pulls are around 3 lbs (just a hair more than my M41), and they are definite "one-holers" if I do my job correctly. Dave_n

I have to get an 845. If only because I want that slide on a 4506 frame. I don't know how much it costs to get that machining done, but it's sooooo cool. Like the Browning HiPower of S&W 45s.

645! It will do anything you ask of it with total reliability. And yes 4500 series mags fit 645/745 and vice versa. Dale

According to Supica & Nahas Smith only made 5,000 745 autos between 1986-1990. Just 5,000 and no more.

745s are much more common than 845s, in addition to being much less expensive.

Magazines made for the Models 645, 4505, 4506 and other 8 shot Third Generation S&W .45 ACP pistols will all work in your 745. Right now, they are where you find them.
