My dad passed recently and he left his gun collection to me. In it were 15 S&W and many others. One gun in the collection has me puzzled to its worth (not for sale) and history.
The gun I need help with is a Winchester Stainless Marine 12 gauge shotgun that has been fired maybe 2-3 times and is in excellent condition. Can anyone tell me something about this shotgun?

I know this is a Smith & Wesson site and apologize to anyone who gets upset with me bring this here, but I read comments on here daily and know there is a ton of knowledge you guys have.

Thank you

Hi Tony and welcome.
Most of here are S&W fans, but we like other guns as well, and Winchesters are very popular with this group.
As to your shotgun questions, I remember those being available about 15 or 20 years ago. Seems like they were a stainless, or maybe nickel plated, Winchester Defender with a mag tube extention and a synthetic stock.
Back in the day I had a couple of Winchester Defenders and they were good guns, although I found that I like the feel of either the Remington 870 or the Ithaca 37 better.

Prior to their availability with the synthetic stock, they were available with wood.....which looks really great with the nickel.

M28-I didn't know that. That would look really nice.
I didn't either until I lucked into buying a small collection from a fellow and he had one NIB. I swear it's one of the prettiest guns I own.

Thank you for the replies. The gun I have has the wood stock. I have to agree about the looks of this shotgun; I have many pistols and revolvers and this gun stands out.

Others are probably more informed on Winchesters, but the stainless marine, I think, was either a 1200 or 1300 (whatever they were making at the time), with a triple plated coating and they were known to be nearly impervious to rust.

Original ones had the receiver treated with the triple plating, and later ones treated just the barrel as the aluminum receiver was left anodized and in the black, I think.

When Phil Engeldrum tested it for his no advertising accepted magazine, I think I recall him throwing it over the side of a boat and letting it drag behind a boat on a chain in the harbor to see if the salt water would cause a problem, or something like that. When he pulled it up, he dipped it in diesel fuel to clean it off. In any event, the shotgun survived with no rust or damage.
