Thinking of getting a 460 7.5 inch barrel from the preformance center and I was wondering if you can remove the rear sight and mount an optic over the cylinder like you can on the non pc models.

Also considering a 629 magnum hunter so same question about that model

I used the Leupold mount & their rings on my 8 3/8's barrel .500 Smith. I just left the front sight on. Why remove it? It's not in the way.

Welcome! All current N (629) and X (460) revolvers have drilled/tapped top straps for an optics mount, and as noted above due to the height of any attached device plus a rail, the front sight will not interfere with the sight picture.

I meant rear sight just fat thumbed it

Even the pc models are drilled and tapped?

My PC 629 .44 magnum Hunter is D&T as well as having a Picatinny rail. You can use either to mount an optic, but you will need to take the rear sight off to mount an optic that way. I would just use the pic rail. Not sure about the X frame guns.

The .44 Magnum Hunter is an excellent revolver by the way, smooth and accurate. It might serve you better for most hunting chores, unless you really feel the need for a .460, and you are a reloader.

The 629 is more than enough and I might go with it

In time I'd like a 500 460 and 44 and will probably get them all. Just not sure which I'll get right now

I just prefer a reflex sight to be over the cylinder for some reason

There are some current models with a barrel rail too, but you don't have to put the optic there. :)

Our 460s, 3.5" and 8.375" are drilled and tapped for mounts.

** The 460 cartridge can be easy shooting or beyond the specs of the 44 Mag when necessary if you load. **

Sights/mounts need to handle the variety of recoil levels.

Dare I say the 44 Mag is old school for hunting and if you buy a 44 they may call you....
"Little Gun" or "man whose bullet falls short" in the near future. :D

pic of Leupold DPP, on mount being made, that fits the Trijicon RMR as well. Tried the RMR on the 3.5" 460 with mild to medium loads.

There is a big advantage with a hunting revolver, in mounting the optics on the barrel. Properly done, if bad weather or optics damage requires it, you can easily remove the optics and use the iron sights (provided they are sighted in). My hunting revolvers are an 8 3/8" barreled S&W model 29 (scoped) and a 7 1/2" Ruger Redhawk (scoped). When I hunted, both were also sighted in with the iron sights in case of a problem. As it happened, all of my deer were taken with the scopes. However, one never knows and I was pleased with the back up plan.
