I was reading the posts about .357 lever rifles so I got mine from the safe. It has an empty non-threaded hole on the receiver upper right of the loading gate. What would that be for?

You'd probably have to hold a seance and talk to John, to be sure. But I'm guessing it's a gas-escape hole, in case of a ruptured cartridge.

Not only do all my Rossi 92s have that hole, but so do my 1914 and 1918 Winchester 92s.

That hole is to gain access to the pin that holds the lever extension to the bolt and you need to remove that pin to remove the bolt for cleaning and other service. Winchester 86's, 92's and 94's are all the same design on different sized actions and the 92 is too short for that pin to be removed with the action open. Ivan
