Question about the front sight of the S&W 686 new model please..

Just maybe.. Not a good idea !
But i would like to know..After watching a lot and diferente videos on internet. , to install and change a new front fiber optic sight.. My question is ..
Why not.. " Marking" with a punch or a fin pointed marker..
That new sight ..Before drilling it..
By installing that new sight in that front grove , where goes the original (Bottom rounded sight)
By Holding that new sight with a " Clamp" strongly..
From the top of the barrel to the top of the new sight, by cheeking that.. .No light , is showing.. from the other side..
Just to Make certain it is at the exact position, in the grove of the barrel been flash with the front of the end of the barrel..
( Like everybody always recommended..
And afer that small job
Just taking it of the barrel .. And to drill with that 0.50 bit in that new sight in a protected vise..
With obviously ..
The recommended 0.50 bit, To avoid to taking any kind.. of risk, damaging that 0.50 drill going inside of that small all of that new barrel , where is install that small Pin in that barrel.. Thanks to any body how would like to answer this question,

I think your question is:


Is it preferable to temporarily place the sight in order to mark the spot to drill, or just place the sight and drill through the existing hole in the barrel...


If so, either method will work.


Choose whichever suits your tools and abilities. Can you accurately mark the spot to drill? Is it easier for you to use the barrel as a guide?



From experience, it is better to screw up the sight than it is to screw up the barrel and the sight.

Thank you so much for your advise..
I have drill frow and no problem..The good news the barrel as no damage as i have used the proper 0.50 Bit, recieved from Amazon,
Its a good bit and its very strong, the only problem i have ..is that i dined hold down enough with a clamp, the LPA Sight and the Result it is just moving up a tiny little bit..
So I'm going to clamp this sight very strongly to the maximum bottom, ( the top of the barrel) And drill again obviously the hole in the sight will be bigger regarding the Hight..But as the Hole where goes the Pin in the gun, will automatically hold that sight down .. And will go on the top side of the hole, in the Sight.., i suppose that the sight in this case will old tight..
What do you thing?
If not i will have to odder a new sight witch is not good news..
But i kno very well that you always pay your mistakes and other front sight in Italy is 29 Euros..

Hey Pinguino,


Drilling the same sight again may create an oval hole in the sight blade. If this happens the pin may not hold the blade tight to the barrel. If so, then you can install the pin with some locktite thread locker in order to take up the excess clearance. Do your best not to ovalize the pin hole in the barrel sight base.


As I noted, it's always better to mess up the sight not the gun!

Thanks Jim for this quick answer again, I thing I will go for the red Loctite,
I was thinking that by drilling again in the same hole, holding it ,, Down Strongly towards the barrel with a plastic clamp it would effectively.. create a Oval in the sight ..
But...Only on the upper side.. Because the oval would be automatically higher, and the Sight would normally and logically go down. and not .. Up, like it is a tiny bit to hi for the moment .. Normally it would go closer to the top of the barrel..
Or maybe.. I'm doing a mistake thinking that would work?
I would relay like your opinion and to know what you thing about that explication, on this one, for certain its beter to just ade some red Loktit and forget about all that..But as you say I'm only risking the sight and not my barrel on this lovely gun..

Good job preserving the pin hole in the barrel!


I would drill the sight as needed to get it properly located, and then use red loctite with the pin to keep it in place.

The sight will be old by the original Pin wish is a: 0.56 that will hold that sight down..Even if the hole in that sight will be a litle oval on the top.. And as you have subjected also..Ade some, Red Loctite,
