I have the standard 15-22 and love it, and I plan on picking up the tacticool22 barrel nut for it to change out the rail, but I'm curious about the barrel nut on the MOE as I've yet to see one in person. Is it something specially designed to mount the MOE hand guards or is it a standard AR barrel nut and delta ring? Thanks guys!

(For the record I tried the search function on these forums as
"difference between MOE" but it seems to search for each word and "different" is in almost every thread on here!)

i am a little confused. so you are not talking about the MOE version of the 15-22.... you are talking about doing the m4 style conversion using the MOE handguards? If so, then you have to use the AR specific barrel nut and delta ring assembly. Then you put that on top of tacticool's barrel nut adapter.

this is the barrel nut you would need (or another brand). it is what the MOE handguards attach to. BARREL NUT | Brownells

you would also need a handguard end cap to secure the front. HANDGUARD CAP, ROUND | Brownells

Handguard Caps, Round | Brownells

if you are talking about something different. disregard what i wrote then never mind. :)

My bad, to clarify I was asking what the barrel nut situation on the 15-22 MOE is stock out of the box.

I think the MOE 15-22 uses the same rail/handguard as all the other 15-22 models so I would imagine it has the same barrel nut as well.

Yeah there is no reason it would be different. You would need a 15-22 specific barrel nut wrench. There is no delta ring.

is there just something like a delta ring attached to the barrel nut for the MOE hand guard to lock into? Or is the hand guard specially designed for the 15-22? I've used the Magpul MOE handguard on an AR platform and it locks into the delta, wondering how it all comes together on the 15-22. Thanks for the info so far guys!

As far as I know, if you want to change your handguard you have to change the barrel nut, and then you would be able to use most any AR handguards.

Here's a video that will help answer your questions: How to convert your 15-22 into an M4 Carbine. - YouTube

And here are a few established threads if you need more info:

Just to clarify for the OP, the MOE version of the 15-22 (BLK and FDE) come with the standard railed handguards, not the Magpul MOE handguards. The MOE version has the MBUS, MOE grip and stock. No MOE handguard. The FDE version comes with 3 rail covers.

If you want to put on a MOE handguard, use the link listed above.

i see where the confusion is. no. there is no delta ring type attachment on the 15-22. the only thing holding the barrel and the handguard to the upper receiver is the barrel nut. if you remove the barrel nut, the handguard comes off, and if you are not careful, the barrel can fall through the receiver on the breech end (where the round loads from).

the receiver end of the hand guard has a opening that only lets the smaller diameter portion of the barrel nut through. the upper larger part of the barrel nut holds down the handguard and pulls it towards the receiver.

the threads are on the inside of the barrel nut. it attaches to the barrel. the notches on the top are what tacticool's wrench grabs onto.

when you swap out the stock barrel nut for tacticool22's adapter, you would still have to buy an AR barrel nut. then you are free to use AR compatible handguards. You would need a delta ring only if you use removable handguards like i have on my rifle. If you use free floating handguards, you don't need the delta ring.

here is my 15-22. I used tacticool22's kit. I had to use a delta ring only because I wanted to use the removable handguards. I went with the carbine handguards, but the cool thing is that i can always change over to the mid-length handguards later on if i want.... I would just have to move the front sight post forward.

Yeah, that is the thread where I first found out it was even possible to switch out the handguard on these rifles. I am still new to the 15-22, but not to the AR/M-16. That guy tlm3210 and others helped me out so much. :o This forum and it's members have taught me so much about the 15-22.

I am trying to pay it forward.

That answers everything for me. Thanks a ton guys! These forums and this community has been a wealth of information.
