Using our database, Charlie and I can often determine if a SN files with the range of Navy SNs, but only Roy's letter will confirm it was shipped from the factory to a Navy destination.

Thanks Steve. I am going to get a letter from Roy but was curious about this one SN# V 76503. Appreciate it. Tony

Tony,

Your gun certainly falls within a SN range of lettered Navy guns. Shipping date is estimated as July/August, 1942.

I presume it's a typical 4" with parkerized finish & smooth stocks; I also gather it has "U.S. NAVY" on the left top strap, but how about any other markings? Navy guns of this period don't typically have additional markings, such as the "P" proof or "W.B." initials on the butt, but I always ask.

Please let us know when you get Roy's letter so that we might enter his info into the database. TIA!

Steve

Thanks Steve will advise when letter arrives...................

Would Serial Number V141574 also fall into the range of Navy Victory models? Based on the thread here, what would be the estimated shippong date?
Thanks!!

Wick,

Navy guns are found throughout the V-1xx,xxx range, but they're not "batched" together as in other SN ranges. Sorry.

Shipping date is estimated as November, 1942. If you get your gun lettered, please post the info here.

Steve

Thanks Steve -

A letter sounds like it might be worthwhile.
If I get one, I will share it on the board.

Thanks again.

Hope Im not horning in on this post but I have a question about a victory model if I could ask a question. New to the forum also. My father was police officer and many years ago a friend gave him a victory military 38 spl 38 with a 4 inch barrel. It is nickeled but I don't have a clue if they ever came nickeled or not. Anyway It is in very good condition. the serial number is V2436. On the butt frame at the bottom on left side there is the number stamped in small numbers 1267 On the right side of the butt frame at bottom it has D8 stamped and a very small H 1 stamped there as well. Can anyone help with date or info about this one? It also has a hole for the lanyard ring that looks like has a plastic plug in it. It has bone colored grips on it. On the inside of the grip it has the company name who made the grips and it says Franzite Chicago, Il on them. Thanks

V2436 would have been shipped early in the production of the V series guns, probably about May 1942. The 1267 and the D8 and H1 are the assembly/work number and the inspector's stamps. The gun has been refinished in nickel and the Franzite grips are after market. The original finish was a dull wartime blue called Sand Blast Blue or Black Magic by S&W. These nickel guns with Franzite grips are typical of surplus guns sold by gun dealers in the US after WW2. Ed

Thanks for the info on Victory models. Is there a listing of serial #s of all Victory models? I am kind of becoming interested in them. Were most .38 Special cal. or .38 S&Ws or pretty mixed. Were the .38 S&Ws mostly for Brittan? I know that's a lot of questions.
Those are very historic & interesting guns!
Thanks in advance.
