I know on the DMZ we carried 7 30 round magazines for the 16, which came to 210 rounds. but that ws in 1983

I spoke with my son just this morning on this subject - he said that each unit had its own rule on how the rounds were carried. They carried seven 30rd magazine; six in pouches on a vest and 1 loaded. I asked about how full the magazines were. He loaded his magazines to 28rds, said they fed better. I should ask him about the other 14 rds - what he did with them...

Funny, I've loaded my mags to 28 rounds since I can remember.

We only had 20's back in the day.
I carried all I could.

As a National Guard infantryman, I carried 13 30 rounders. The std. was seven magazines/210 rds., but when I first served (1988) everyone in my unit was issued 4 20s and 2 30s. I had incredibly strong legs back in those days, so I usually carried a couple hundred rounds for the M-60 and two, or three, batteries for the prick-77. Everyone had to carry a lot of crap in an understrength NG platoon (it was really bad in '92-'94 after Bush 41 and Clinton wrecked the NG), plus the idiotic crap that officers and senior NCOs sometimes foist on grunts. The last year I served, I was an RTO and I'll guess my rucksack and other gear hit the 100 lb. mark at times.

What's an M16? I always made sure I had a full pouch of patches & balls & my powder horn had plenty of powder! ( I thought I better post this reply before Lee, and other miscreants, accused me of being too old for a combat veteran!) Ed #15

Did you carry a spare match?

(as in "matchlock") :D

Are they still loading 3 tracers for the last rounds in the mag?

Confederate Marines carry 40 rounds of .577 for the 1853 Enfield:

I was in Iraq in 2004-2005. We carried seven 30 round magazines for our M4s, six in pouches, one in the gun, and two 15 round magazines for our M9s. All were loaded full with ball ammo. These were the minimums; you could carry as many as you could carry.
