Question For Night Guard Owners

I am not a night guard owner, but I did put a set of the C&S extreme duty fixed rear sights on my 386 mountain lite and they are fantastic. They seem to be regulated for 158 grain projectiles, and the windage is dead on. I think they are fantastic and useful.

The sights are great... I have had 2 of them and traded both off.
They do tend to have a lot of them with failure to fire problems straight out of the box; both of mine had to go back to smith for longer firing pins

My only experience with them is on a 325NG, which uses the XS short Dot tritium front sight. The combination works well for my old eyes.
As far as the C&S rear sight goes, I'd think it would work well with just about any front sight. It lets plenty of light through, so you can get a fast sight picture. Its fixed, so you might want to look at how your revolver shoots with your main load. If it requires a lot of windage adjustment now, you may have a problem regulating the C&S sight. Elevation adjustment may require shims, if it shoots low, but that's no big deal (If I can do it, believe me anyone can). If you revolver shoots high then things get more difficult.
One problem I've had is with the screws coming loose. I think this is a function of the NG and not the rear sight, but others that have had experience with them on steel revolvers might be able to provide input.

I recently acquired a 325NG and the sights are the best fixed sights I have ever had. I agree about the screws coming loose on the rear sight. The front one near the forcing cone is the problem because the top strap is bored straight through, and I suspect that the blast through the cylinder gap causes it to loosen up.

Steve, I do the same thing and usually that solves the problem. But on my particular 325NG, it's only a "sorta" fix. Depends on the load. If I'm shooting my bullseye load (200 gr SWC/5.0 Unique), the screws seem to behave no matter how many rounds I fire. When I move up to the hardball level, 150-200 rds seems to loosen them up again. Shooting the 255 gr SWC @ 800fps in an AR case will loosen them in 100 rds or so.
Our friend from Wyoming may have a point.
When you get yours mounted, I'd like to know how they work for windage and elevation. Let us know.

C & S Rear Sights
I have all three revolvers mainly carry the 627 UDR for work. Changed the 310NG rear sight for an adjustable rear because of the differences in ammo that I get from the departments. Still can't carry those evil hollow points here in Jersey.

I have a 386 Night Guard and I like it very much. The sight is fabulous. Quick target acquisition. The gun shoots very well with Cor-Bon 125's.
I put a Hamilton Bowen Rough Country V-notch w/white verticle line rear sight on my Night Guard; I just put "the pumpkin on the post" and fire away... it's a good set up in low light conditions on my NG329. I have "older eyes" and found this to work better than the stock sights, not that they aren't good, I just found the Bowen sight to work better for me.
Well, I bought a Cylinder & Slide Extreme Duty fixed rear sight for my 627. Unfortunately, the C&S rear sight and the tall front sight on my 627 didn't get along. With the C&S rear sight installed, it was shooting everything ~5" low at 10 yards. I managed to get it shooting to point of aim by shimming the C&S, but didn't care for this solution, so I removed the C&S sight and reinstalled the factory one.
The factory adjustable rear sight is "ok," but I find its blade notch too shallow and too narrow to be able to quickly pick up the front sight and, imo, it's on the fragile side for an everyday carry gun. Smith has been using this same rear sight for decades and I never cared for them.
After a bit of searching, I came across a company called Bowen Classic Arms. They make a heavy-duty adjustable rear sight called the "Rough Country" that appears to be what I'm looking for. It's ruggedly built, its adjustments are positive, and its blade notch is both deeper and wider than the factory's. After reading a couple of positive reviews about it, I ordered one through Brownells and hope to have it by early next week. I'll report back on how I like it after I get to the range with it. Hopefully, this will be the last sight I buy for this revolver.

I have a 396NG. The sights are great for their intended purpose - easy to line up and quick to aquire. The gun is very accurate as well.

I find the sight system on the 325 NG .45acp snub to be one of the best and fastest in acquisition that I have on any pistol. Mine is very accurate, as well.

Steve, sorry to hear it didn't work out. Going to a fixed sight on an adjustable sight revolver is tricky because, in addition to bullet weight and velocity, the front sight height, bbl length, and revolver weight all play a part. I had to shim my NG sight .003 to get it up enough for my carry load (Double Tap 230 gr HP in the AR case). It's not a perfect solution, but one I can live with, until something better comes along.
If the Bowen sight is any where near tough as it looks, it might be that "something better".

I got the Bowen Rough Country sight yesterday and swapped it in. I think it looks good on the gun and the sight picture is a big improvement over the factory sight. Admittedly, it's not as nice as the C&S sight picture, but that's water under the bridge at this point.
Anyway, I intended to go to the range this morning, but we got yet another snow/ice storm overnight which made driving treacherous. I'm going to try again tomorrow.
