I know the name "Elmer Keith" and know that he had something to do with the .357 magnum, but am ignorant beyond that, so I decided to buy his book, "Hell, I Was There".

Just won an ebay auction for a hardback copy. There is a signed sticker in the front of the book, allegedly with Mr. Keith's autograph on it. I did not buy the book because of the signature, but because I want to read it. Would be an extra bonus, though, if that is really his signature. The seller said he thinks that Mr. Keith signed 1000 such stickers which were then stuck in 1000 books. Anybody else out there have a book with this kind of signed sticker in it? Whether or not the signature is real, can't wait for the book to arrive!

It looks legit compared to examples I have but of course only an expert can confirm such a thing.

I have 'Hell I Was There' sent from Idaho 'signed' by Elmer to me.
It appears to be sgned with a Fountain Pen on inside blank page.
Allegedly his wife did a lot of Elmer's paperwork and writing.
I guess I have a problem with Elmer signing 1,000 stickers.
Elmer was a Cowboy, he was not the Company clerk!

I bought "Hell I was there" from him in Salmon Id and he autographed the book to me and that looks like his signature. I cut the front of the shipping box off with my address and his return address all in his hand writing. Also have Sixguns by Keith book and Shotguns by Keith, I got those from book supply company. You will really enjoy your new book. Jeff

Did Elmer use a Fountain Pen?
That's what my write up and signature looks like.

I have the same sticker in my edition of the book. EXCELLENT read. There are times and experiences that he had that were questionable or just wrong but unlike most scribes today he lived the title. He was there, he saw the elephant, he has the scars and the T-shirt to prove it. A friend was in his hometown and drove slowly by Elmer's house. He and his wife were sitting on their porch. They made eye contact and my friend waved. Elmer motioned him to come back. My friend sat on the porch for hours re-living his experiences. It was getting late and while he and Elmer were visiting, Elmer's wife was making up the spare bedroom for him. He said their hospitality was down home and personal.

Bad case of....

Bad case of writer's cramp. But if he was convinced that it would pay off, why not??? I'll bet he didn't do it in one night. Probably just while watching "Gunsmoke", or maybe 'The Brady Bunch' reruns on TV. :)

What I find amazing is that the states that Keith operated in were already admitted to the Union by the time he was born, yet, aside from a sheriffs of big enough towns, you made your own law. In trying to get criminals to give up, they were often told that Keith had no compunction about shooting or even killing a bad guy.

While Old Elmer had some input into the .357 Magnum, he had A LOT to do with the introduction of the .44 Magnum and the .41 Magnum.

I believe you will enjoy your new book. I reread mine every few years or so.
