Anyone else ever seen a KAP s/n prefix on a 3rd Generation Pistol.

Stumbled across a 4040PD a while back KAP0001.
Comes back from SW as 8/2013 and per Roy Ship Date 8/2013 to Employee Store.

Just a wild guess (I read Roy's response) but what if an employee got permission to use his initials for a serial number or it was made up as a presentation gun to someone with the initials KAP?

Interesting thought but he/she would need to be pretty high up to get initials as s/n prefix.

But then if it was really manufactured in 2013 well after end of known 4040PD production (2003-2006?) and in fact well after end of most 3rd Production pistols and not in a contract for 500 units, purchaser would need to be pretty special.

Wish I had been paying more attention back in September 2023 when i stumbled on it somewhere on internet, maybe Gunbroker?

Closest that I have is a KAZ prefix… from the 952 no dash and 952-1.

Mine is a 952-1 and it is from May, 2002.

KAP0001 is the serial number of the pistol in the photo used by S&W Marketing to introduce the first Scandium frame pistol, the Model 4040PD. That photo was used in the flyer or spec sheet and the S&W 2003 and 2004 Catalogs which I have. I found these items when searching for my 4040PD a few years ago. The flyer or spec sheet is dated February 2003. I believe it was a special serial number used for promotion and subsequently sold through the employee store in 2013. Most of the serial numbers I saw when searching began with BAW and VJL.

Thanks for the input - that would make sense - it could have been a prototype or a unit put together for advertising and left in inventory as a hanger queen then sold when SW was clearing out unsold 3rd generation pistols in 2013.

All other known 4040PD VJL, VJJ, BAW, BAY, BDJ. Agree Most Common BAW & VJL.
