Have a 6" 686 RB in 38 SPL inbound. Frame mounted FP. Any info on it? I bought it to shoot.

It is chambered for 38, not 357. Barrel is marked "38Special +P"

I used to perform warranty service and repair for S&W, never heard of this model. I understand a littermate in 4" was made in 1988.

Some have stated they were made for export, i.e., foreign police.

I'd hate to have to pack one of these around on a double shift. LOL

Any idea on production numbers?

I've seen several runs of them, last ones were dated 2009. They were 2.5", 4" and 6" barrels, never heard actual numbers or reason for them(export, LE overrun, etc).

I also have one that has a 3" barrel (marked as such on the case)...was given the same reason....export, overrun, etc.

I was bidding on a 3" Version. I ran the Number and it came back as a Law Enforcement Distributor Gun.

My undrestanding is some Cities have regulations on Guards that they have to carry 38 Special Revolvers. You also see a 38 Special GP100 now and again.

Also some foreigh countries do not allow the 357 Magnum. No idea why. Probably the same places that do not allow Military Cartridges like the 9mm in civilian hands.

The thing I liked about the 3" 686 38 Special is it is still a SIX Shooter. They are not making the 3 Inch in a 6 shot version at this time for regular sales. All 3" Models are the 686PLUS.

Sounds logical. Thanks for the info. It will be used for plates and/or Dist. Revolver, if it measures up.
