I am confused. I have a S&W compact with a 4"barrel 15 round M&P ( optic cut, safety trigger, 15 round magazines). I was looking at an advertisement for a sub optic M&P 3" barrel. I started looking at the S&W pistols and I came across this pistol:
Smith and Wesson M&P 9 M2.0 Compact Optics Ready For Sale 9mm 13570 022188889543 3.6 15 Round Black
It has a 3.6 inch barrel and is marked compact. Does this pistol use the same magazines as my 4 inch compact? Is this the same pistol as the one I have that I described or a different one? Does S&W have two compacts - one with a 4 inch barrel and one with a 3.6 inch barrel? This appears to be the case.
Appreciate any information on the subject.

Yes, the 9mm M&P 2.0 Compact is the same pistol that comes in versions with 4.0" and 3.6" barrels.

There are 20 commercial models of the Compact, of which 16 have 4.0" barrels and 4 have 3.6" barrels.

There are also 11 Law Enforcement models of the Compact, of which 7 have 4.0" barrels and 4 have 3.6" barrels.

I have a 3.6" version of the Compact, which balances better for me than the 4.0" version.

The M&P 2.0 Subcompact has a 3.6" barrel, but the grip is shortened to take 12-round magazines rather than the 15-round magazines the Compacts use.

I previously had a 1.0 version of the Subcompact but I found the higher-capacity Compact to be as easy to conceal.

The 3.6" and 4" are the same guns, just with different barrel lengths. Like the Shield 2.0 with 3.1" and 4" barrels, that share the same mags, the 4" and 3.6" Compacts also share the same magazines.

The M&P 1.0 Compact has the 3.6 inch barrel but holds only 12 round of 9mm (flush mag). S&W changed the "labeling" of this to Subcompact when it released the 2.0.

So Compact and Subcompact, when it comes to the M&P 2.0 line, seem to refer more to flush mag capacity rather than barrel length these days.
