I am looking at a nice Smith 27 that has the 6 1/2 barrel. Someone went and replaced the whole rear sight with something non factory (no holes drilled where they are not supposed to be). If I cannot find an original 27 rear sight, with the factory making "classic" 27's, will one of the rear sights from those guns fit? The bluing on the gun I am looking at is very nice so the finish won't be an issue I wouldn't think.

There's different rear sights used, the one you probably need will have a square front on it while the modern one is shorter and has a round front and the retaining screw hole is larger and not in the same place.

There's 2 different rear sight screw hole positions found on what appear at first glance to be identicle M27 rear sight assemblys.
(These are the earlier square front assemblies,,not the short, rounded end ones currently used)

The earlier , pre-27 guns have the screw closer to the front end of the tang than the later versions. The difference is only approx 1/8" difference.
Both sight assemblys look the same with their checkered surfaces, ect. The attaching screw used is the same.
Rear sight blade heights are different between the different barrel lengths also.

A couple of sources for the correct sight assemblies come to mind: Direct from S&W. Call the cust service # (on their web site) Lots of times they will have NOS parts on hand. Second, call Jack First. (google it). Ebay periodically has them listed also, but caveat emptor! Oh, place a WTB ad on the S&W forum!!
