Hi all I have a chance to pick up a used M&P40C to keep my new FS M&P 9 company I just got. My question is hoe is the recoil from the compact 40 I have arthritis in my wrists so I don't want to pick it up if it is real bad. Thank you for any help on this.:) And also would S&W cover the pistol under warranty because I did not buy it new if it had a problem? Thanks in advance for your help.

I have a M&P40C & I find the recoil very tolerable. I do shoot a lot of 40, though, so maybe I'm used to it. As far as the warranty, I've heard it both ways. It seems like its a little unpredictable. The lifetime warranty is to the original purchaser, but I've heard of S&W repairing guns that were purchased used. Sorry, I realize this isn't much help.

I think the recoil will be a bit much for arthritis hands. My father in law has trouble with his 9c at times (can't shoot too long). Never know until YOU try it out though.

The M&P40C and M&P40 are very similar in recoil. Do you have a local range that would let you rent either to try out?

I shot my 9C next to a 40 C and could barely notice any difference in recoil.

I have the 40C and the 9 FS. The 40 has more recoil, but not all that much more. No question there is a difference, but I find it quite tolerable.

The 40c is my LTC gun. I find the recoil to be a little snappy. Not painful, but also not something I choose to run a few hundred rounds through in a single shooting session.

Buy the 40c if it is a good price and a 9mm barrel and mags if it is too much for your hands.

If your even asking a question about a .40cal because you have arthritis it's going to be to heavy for you depending on how your arthritis is day by day.. My wife has it and most of the time is so bad she can't unscrew a cover off something.. Have you ever shot a .357? IMO it's somewhat like that.. I myself shoot a .45 acp and like it a lot! Recoil is slower with more push then snap. I can shot a .45 all day long and not mind.. I could not do that with a .357 or .40.. If you want a bigger heaver bullet look at a .45 it's a lot easier on you and is known for it's knock down power with a good defensive hollow point in .45 or .45+P that's a little hotter but still not bad to shoot! I made up my mind I got a compact M&P 9 what made me choose the 9 was I shot a friends M&P 40 FS and the recoil was to much. So I went with the 9. Thanks for all the input folks.:)

Not a bad choice :D.... Personally (no arthritis), I find the M&P40FS and 40C to be quite comfortable, too, but I'm a 1911 guy, and the 40's only slightly different. Snappier.... OTOH, all of my 1911's are steel - nothing "lightweight". The M&P's are quite a bit lighter, which increases apparent recoil.

I have an M&P9C, 40FS, and 40C. My daughter (she's 28, but fairly petite) finds the 9C rather better for her use, but is happy as a clam with target reloads in a full sized 1911. She tends to shoot a little to the left, resulting in a suggestion that she tell the BG to move a bit, but since she won't carry it, hardly germane. She likes to make noise :D....

My wife's got arthritis and diabetic neuropathy. I don't think she'd be able to handle anything but a 9mm or .22, but she won't come out to the range. "Not ladylike".... :D She has shot .45's before, though, with excellent results, but that was before most of her problems surfaced quite a few years back.]

Enjoy the new M&P! I don't think you'll regret it.

Regards,

Ya I'm a1911 .45 guy too and I find the recoil to be different enough from the 9mm. I find my.45 Colt officers model MK IV stainless steel to be easier to shoot longer like I said it's a slow push back no snap to it.. But OP I'm glad you made a choice. But you still may want to shoot a compact .45 again just to see if it's easier on you then a 9mm.. I find it that way for me! George
