I came across one today that looks pretty good. It's a pre-lock gun. It's very clean. It has a 6" barrel (my older eyes appreciate this length). It's got the Hogue black rubber S&W grips. MIM trigger/hammer.

Looks like a fun shooter.

Questions:

Is it worth $600 plus sales tax?
(if not, what is it worth?)

Is it an L-frame

Any extraction issues with the this model.

Thanks.

It's a K frame.Extraction mainly depends on the ammo brand.
For 600 bucks,it should be like new,not just "pretty good".
A new one is 7 and change,I believe. The lock doesn't bother me-I do prefer the frame contour of the lockless version however.

Camster,
It is like new...I tend to understate a bit.

Thanks for the help!!!

$600 seems a little high to me.

I bought one new in March for $645 + tax. Granted that's a very good price. Still, at $600 seems a bit high.

They are tough to find. If you've been looking for one for a while and that's the best you've found I suppose $600 isn't bad for mint. Not great price though.

I wouldn't worry about the $600 price tag as used ones almost never come up and when they do they don't stay on the shelf for long.

Bud's Gunshop had a 4" 617 used for about $575 last week and it sold within 24 hours.

My 617-6 only has extraction problems with Wolf "Match" ammo. Every other brand has been fine.

I don't doubt anybodies word but I am ready to make a pilgrimage to that magical land of adjustable sighted stainless K and L framed Smiths with prices under $600 including tax. Went into a well stocked Smith shop three days ago and the prices on new guns had gone up $15 in a month. For a 617(six or ten shot) in great shape $600 is a g.o.o.d price these days and this time next year it'll seem great(either because prices have gone way up or because nobodies got the cash to buy one at ANY price!). Most shops sell new in the high $700 range, over $800 if you have to pay tax.

And to me the classic look of the pre lock frame sweep is worth a little more.

Have to agree.
While not a great price sometimes +/- 50-100 dollars is pocket change If its a pistol that you have been searching for for quite a while.

My list of "alittle high but paid for:
M51
M60-10
RRA AR

617s are hard to find because no one wants to let them go.

Check out the graphs that 5wire has posted in past threads. He has some great data on 617's.

I think 600 is a decent price but not a bargain. It's hard to find 10 shot 617-4's, especially 4 inch ones. The six's are usually $50 or so short of the fours.

Thanks for all the help. This is a real strange unit...they are not around/available and yet they are valued low. I've never seen one (10 shot) close to $600 in the shops I frequent...I need to get out more!

It may be one of those that is still behind the "value curve"...only demand will show where they will go in the long run.

If I were guessing, I'd suspect the pre-lock guns will hold their own over time.

LOTS of GOOD information. Thanks to all of you. I feel I've learned a bunch with this thread.

Here ya go:

Smith & Wesson 617 Plus Revolver in .22, Long Rifle. Bluebook of Gun Values (31st Edition) indicates between $326 in 95% condition and $631 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 46 recorded prices for this model gun from $350 to $760 over a period of 6 Yrs 9 Mos ending June 16, 2010. The average price as of that date was $478. No refurbs, no refinishes, regular sights all represented as 95% or better, no distinction for import location or engineering revision, if any, no special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $940.

Here's how the data charts out. Where the average price trend is over $600 as of June 2010, it would seem that a really good example of the gun, especially with box & papers, would be a pretty good price. Note the comparison to inflation. The 617 is a very popular revolver indeed!

Looks like I got an absolute steal for NIB at $645.

5wire,
Good stuff! Thanks!!

I pulled the trigger. It's got no extraction issues with Federal Bulk Pack. Plenty accurate. I think this is a gun that does not make it "back" on the market after initial purchase...thus few seen for sale. I can say now I understand the appeal.

Thanks.

Mr. 5wire,
Add one 617-4 with 6" barrel @ $599.00 plus MO Sales tax...out the door $651 (a very clean 98% with no box)...July 10th, 2010 - Kansas City Area.

Happy Birthday to me.
