I recently purchased a used S & W 1006.
It's an earlier production pistol in pretty nice shape. It has a recoil spring guide rod that has the standard spring that slides around the guide rod, and the guide rod has an internal spring inside it. The guide rod is an assembly with multiple telescoping parts and appears to be held together with a roll pin. My research says this is a first design guide rod.

I also found a "washer" up inside the recoil spring tunnel. The guide rod has a small cross drilled hole at the front end. Was this originally a captive recoil spring? It isn't now.

Is it possible to change to the second design guide rod which is supposedly non-telescoping and made like a conventional solid guide rod?

And more importantly, where can I get one?

If I had accurate dimensions and am unable to purchase a new guide rod, I can machine one out of 17-4 PH stainless steel.

It's kind of hard getting a clear idea of what yours looks like but it doesn't sound like any of the usual guide rods I've seem. Several things don't sound right.

Can you post a picture? That would be helpful.

I've never seen a captive spring on a factory 3rd Gen.

As you mention there have been several types of guide rods, & diameters. Some had an "extra" part (collar), not seen in others but the 1006 wasn't one of them.

Here's a picture (not mine) from another thread. Does your's look like one of them?

I can get a picture posted on Monday.
No, my 1006 guide rod doesn't look like either in your picture.

I have seen two recoil rods used in the 5" guns the Aluminum and a Stainless Steel both being same dimensions.
For my 1006 I use the Wolff Gunsprings 22 lbs. Stock is 18 lbs and I also have a 24 lbs to test heavy load development.

Shot my new one today for the first time, even using low powered ammo it launches the brass. How well does the 22 pound spring tame that? I plan to order a Wolf spring pack, new magazine springs and several recoil springs.
