Questions about conversion barrel

Wished I had known. Sometimes having more money than brains gets the best of me. I bought the SL.

Unfortunately no. You can go .40 or .357 sig to 9mm and swap between the .40 and .357 but you can't go up. That was the main reason I held out for an M&P40.

Does anyone have some updates on .40 to 9mm conversion? Problems? Which caliber do you find you use the most?

I'm searching tons of forums about it, but not really getting any info on any long term affects. I'm looking to purchase my first handgun for HD and range, but I can't afford to purchase 2 weapons. SO, that's why I was considering a m&p .40 for HD and purchasing a 9mm barrel to drop in to take to the range.

Plus, if SHTF...I've got some versatility out there.

Any other info guys?

Smith barrels

I called Midway last Monday for a SL conversion barrel. They are on back order till March 7. Can I call Smith for a barrel?

I have an M&P 40C and was wondering could I buy a conversion kit to change it to 9 mm? What would I need to buy? Barrel, spring, new mags?

All you need is a barrel. You apparently don't need 9 mags as the 40 mags will work with 9mm but it is said the last round might not feed. I went ahead and bought 3 9mm mags anyways.

Conversion barrel

I just got off the phone with Smith. The barrels are out of stock for a month.I guess SL is it. Midway said out of stock until March 7:confused:.

9mm Conversion (Again!)

I've been following the post here and on other sites for a while 'bout the 9mm conversion so here is my 2 cents. I picked-up a M&P FS 357 Sig. combo that came with the factory 40 cal. barrel, night sights, and three mags a year or so ago. I liked the set-up so much thought I would get a 9mm. so I went the Stormlake route... special... deal barrel and two mags for around $160!. Same issue as some others reported could not even chamber a round, called SL sent barrel back, got new barrel, chambered round, now FTE. Sent barrel back SL said it was in spec., got out the Dermel polished etc. to get it to work; sure was pretty with that shine, but to no avail. Worked great for the first 50-100 rounds. Then FTE. (good practice dealing with FTE's!). Just received my S&W 9mm from Midway, slid right in went to the range, ran 'bout 250 rounds not a problem!! :D Shots were nice and tight love the feel and cheap shooting! I guess the moral is that some SL barrels fit and some don't! I have not heard anybody say they had problems with a 9mm S&W BARREL with the 357 sig. or 40 cal.?? Guess somebody's specs are off??

Checked with Midway, they had said barrels were due on March 14th. So I called on the 15th and now they said the new date is April 2. If I called Storm Lake direct would it be faster? Any suggestions?

Midway 9mm

I sorta got the same answer from Midway when I first ordered my S&W 9mm barrel around 3/6/12. Their online notice said B.O. 'til 4/14/12 but I received mine around the 15th of March! They will allow you to put in a backorder for the barrels and that's what I did ... and was pleasantly suprised!! Clean it well, I was suprised with the amount of rust in mine. Not pitting rust just surface, but it was rust. See my post above it is a real nice fit and economical shootin!;) Anybody want to buy a shiny Storm lake!!:( (just kidding!) Get the S&W !!

Are you saying you'd still use a Storm Lake barrel after all the problems you've read they have?

This is interesting. I own an M&P 40 Pro with a 5" barrel. My neighbor owns an M&P 9 with a 5" barrel. His 9mm barrel will not work in my gun. The 9mm barrel doesn't allow my M&P40 pro to lock up. Of course I can't talk for anyone else here, but in this instance the factory 9mm barrel just doesn't work. I did buy a Storm Lake 9mm conversion barrel and have had zero problems with it after approx. 1000 rounds. It's a mystery to me.

Interesting. Must be something different about the barrels on Pro. They're a straight swap on the standard model (fs).

Is there any damage that can be caused to the gun by using the factory 9 barrel instead of a conversion barrel? Basically, what's the worst that can happen, you get a FTE or FTF, or could the gun (or you) be seriously damaged? I'd prefer to just go the factory barrel route if the most case is that it's not terribly accurate since I just want to use the 9 for plinking fun.

Lost Lake, I would try the SL barrel to see if it would work. Midway said yesterday it's on the way. S&W said its back ordered. Will try both and write a range report. What else is a option?
