I just picked up a Model 64 38 Special and have a few questions about it. Based on S/N,D428xxx, it was made in late 1972 thru early 1973.

Barrel is stamped for 38 Special but can it shoot +P ammo?

If is has a Dash number, would it be stamped on the yoke with the model number?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum! Yes, you can shoot +P ammo. If it had a dash number, it would be with the model number on the yoke.

Hello
I believe you will find that your revolver shipped in 1972. In that year, the heavy barrel variant was introduced and it was designated the Model 64-1. If the gun shipped with a tapered barrel, it remained a no-dash revolver until 1977, when the gas ring was moved to the cylinder from the yoke. Then the tapered barrel variant was given the designation Model 64-2. At that time the heavy barrel Model 64 became the dash 3.
All of the stainless revolvers from this period would be fine with +P ammunition.

JP

It seems I missed a bit of detail in my response. Thanks for the clarification!

Thanks for the info. I hope to hit the range next week.

+P is, according to the factory, OK in any K frame revolver stamped with the Model number. Your Model 64 is a K frame.

The engineering change (dash number, as you call it) would be stamped in the yoke with the Model number. It should appear as Mod 64-x.
