Questions regarding box and label

In the next couple of days I'll be looking at a 28-2 and have a few questions regarding the box and label. The gun dates from 1970 give or take 6 months.

I've attached a couple of pics that he sent me. Any comments or expert opinion's on if the box and label look legit?

To me they both look really new and the font for "Smith & Wesson" is larger and longer than other label's that i've seen. Thanks

I haven't opened the safe to look at any N frame box labels from that period, but at first blush it looks okay to me. The box is clearly from the right era - "A Bangor Punta Company" is there, as it should be.

In my opinion the box looks legitimate, but, I think you will find that it may have been issued to another Model 28-2 seeing that the numerical portion of the serial number was inked over.

Thanks for the comments so far...the 4 digit serial # on the box matches the gun....I added the black out to the picture only.

It may be my eyes, but does that handwriting on the label look like it was all from the same person?

In my little playbook on labels, this is a dead give-away that it may be bogus, not always, but possible. They are selling blank labels on several auction sites and there are sellers who buy them and force match a package together.

The 28 is great shooter regardless of cardboard boxes and labels.

Looks ok to me.
Personally, I don't worry too much about boxes,especially for used guns.For me, it's 100% about the condition of the gun,and I'm very fussy.

Here are 2 shots of end labels that I just had handy for this post. The Model 36 is 1965, and the Model 31-1 is 1975.

Your end label looks righteous to me, as does the box, especially the metal edge clips with the one evidencing a slight amount of rust, just like most all I've seen that are valid.

The Internet repops, especially from that guy "B.......c" are much "cheaper" cardboard (thinner), the colors don't exactly match, and never, but never, any rust or even signs of scuffing, unless they are blatantly artificial.

Just my two cents, but as always check the gun out thoroughly, the box is a plus but only if you really want the gun.

To all -- thanks for the replies. I had a chance to look at the gun today, and as most of you pointed out...the box and label looked legit in person. It just had the look of a box that was 48 yrs old. I passed on the gun though, had a couple of minor issues, both lower side cover screws were bugged up and a small dent on the frame corner where it meets the barrel. otherwise close to new...he was firm at 750. Thanks again.
