Quick, before I commit to buying an M640 PRO

My LGS has the 640 pro for $789.00. Is this a good price?

I'll answer with a somewhat wishy-washy "it depends." Your lgs would likely also charge you sales tax, ya?

I paid $700 for my NIB 640-1 Pro last spring, and since then I've seen them as low as $689. And then there was...

Shipping: $30

My ffl's transfer fee: $20 (but he waved it--his shop is across the street, and we're friends. I'm always happy to pay his $20 fee, and I never act "entitled" to him waving it; but I'm ever appreciative when he does).

My bank's $5 fee for the cashier's check (I don't do USPS MOs)

The FedEx $7 fee to send the cashier's check (I don't use USPS).

The 60 mile round-trip to the bank and FedEx.

Bottom line: if had it to do over again, I would have paid Bill (my lgs guy) his price and our 5% sales tax to have him order the gun for me (if, of course, he could have gotten a 640-1 Pro).

Sometimes, after a lot of time and hassle, a good deal really isn't one. Everyone's situation is unique.

Hello,
I picked up a 640-1 pro a few weeks ago in my local gun shop.
Went in over my lunch break to buy some ammo and there she was, he had 550.00 marked on it. Sold it as used since he took it in on a trade bit it appears to be new and unfired. Included original box and all the paperwork.

I can't say enough about my 640 Pro that hasn't already been said. If I'm not carrying my Shield 9mm I'm carrying it. The only thing I do recommend is when you buy it look it over good. Mine did not have the problem but I've heard of many compliants of people with cocked barrels on their's.

Well I decided to put some money down on a Pro but when I went back to Bud's site now they're only selling them to "Team Bud's" members. I'm not going to pay just for the privilege of being allowed to buy a product they're selling anyway. As luck would have it I was talking about it at work and one of the guys has an M649 which he offered to loan me to take up to the woods next time I go shooting which may be tomorrow. So let's see what I think of his 649.

Hi,
I agree withTAC about the 640 a s the 686.
I'm fortunate enough to have a640-3 (not a 640 Pro-that sou 's like a great gun) and a 3" 686-6+. They are both "two of my favorite children". Lately I've been neglecting them and carrying a 360J .38. It's so light that I almost forget that I'm carrying it.
Good luck with your choices and stay safe.

The 640 Pro is a beauty. I have a 640 that wants to be a 640 Pro when it grows up -- it has been moonclipped and has a Trijicon night sight pinned on the front plus the larger "three finger" S&W grips. It is a superb gun for its intended use and is very accurate. The 640 Pro should be all of that and a bit more, with the larger rear sight. (The 649 you mention is pretty cool too, and less commonly seen).

The extra weight of the steel guns make them pretty easy to shoot with .38 Specials, and when I take my 640 to the woods I take a +P JHP or LSWC in .38 Special ammo. Plus a moonclip of five more. (.357 would work too, but I prefer something with a bit less recoil). The extra weight also means you can spend more time shooting these guns on the range than might be the case with an Airweight, increasing proficiency. My 640 fits nicely in either the Simply Rugged Pancake or the De Santis thumb break and is trivial to carry for long periods. Some people pocket carry them, but they weigh a tad too much for me to do that comfortably.
